Decisions on new CPU

Ginga_NZ

So I'm looking to upgrade from my current ryzen 1600.

I was looking at the new 5600x but at a price of around 550NZD I decided to consider other options. It comes down to either the 3600 or the 10400f.

I'm leaning towards to 10400f as it's about 150NZD cheaper than the 3600.

Use case is pretty much pure gaming.

Thoughts or suggestions on why spending the extra on the 3600 might be worth while appreciated. But basically I can get CPU, MOBO, RAM for about 500NZD. (Had a fault with ram and currently only have a single stick of budget 2333mhz ddr4, so suggesting using my current ram and getting the 3600 with saved money isn't viable.)

Also if you're wanting to suggest other parts please use pricespy.co.nz to confirm their relative value as NZ prices don't always compare with MSRP.

Thank for your time and help in advance.

Currently I have a gigabyte b350 gaming 3 mATX

I would upgrade that no matter what.

I'd choose whatever's cheaper, and also get a 2x8GB kit of at least 3200 MHz CL16/3600 CL18, though 3200 CL14/3600 CL16 is preferred.

Basically what I was planning the 10400f with a h470 mobo and 16gb 3000mhz cl16.

Didn't think the extra speed on the memory would matter if you can adjust timings and stuff on h470

I would go with the Intel CPU. The extra 150NZD can get you at least one better tier performing graphics card. For instance, an RTX 3060 to an RTX 3060ti (just as an example).

Edit: Since games are mostly GPU bound, getting a better GPU over the 3600 (which performs about the same as the 10400f in games) would be more beneficial.

The more I learn, the more I realise I don't actually know anything.

Recommendations: Lian Li 205m (sleek, pretty decent airflow for a non-mesh front panel and cheap), i5-10400f (Ryzen 5 3600 performance, 20% cheaper), Arctic P14 PWM fans, Logitech g305.

A 9400F might be another option

Haha yeah a good idea except the only one I can find is $25 more than the 10400f

Oh right, well my point still stands. You'll get the same performance and save 150NZD by going with the 10400F. If you don't have one already, getting an aftermarket cooler is a very nice upgrade as well.

I think the extra $25 is worth it.

Is this a 10400F combo?

I believe so but even the new cpu and ram will cost about the same as a new cpu mobo and ram

It will, but I don't advise running a 3600 with that B350 board.

As it is, I only have 4 CPU power phases, with 8 phases total, both with heatsinks.

That board has 7 phases, with only 4 having heatsinks.

I would recommend the 10400f. Even though the limited ram speed on h470 would bottleneck the performance of the 10400f, the 10400f would still perform quite similarly to the 3600, in gaming use-cases, other use cases are a different story, but that's not really the focus. How much are you paying for the 10400f? It's not 400nzd is it... ? If it is even for NZ that's a pretty bad price.

Nah it's about 205

I think the extra $25 is worth it.

I think you'll be the only person recommending a 9400f that costs $25 more than a 10400f

I wouldn't understand why anybody would recommend one. The performance in all aspects is worse, it lacks hyperthreading, and it's on a dead platform.

Ohh, I read it wrong, my bad. It was late at night.

Thought you meant the 10400F was $25 more than the 9400F, in which case it is definitely worth the extra $25.
