Hi all,

I have no idea where to turn to but LLT always come to mind for help. If I sound like I don't know what I'm talking about humour me.

Put simply, I am trying to setup my first NAS.
I have already setup virtual machine (oracle virtual box manager) with xpenology running.
I have 4 x 10tb Ironwolf pro drives ready for RAID 10.
I am currently using spare HP Z440 workstation.

I seem to be stuck at how to assign the 4 physical drives to virtual box as the limit is 2tb. From my understanding I need to convert the physical drives into vmdk and then add that to the virtual machine. From researching this cant be done in GUI and apparently requires to run command lines in linux host to assign the drive however this is beyond my knowledge and I got confused even reading the simple instructions.

Any help with this at all would be appreciated as I'm going in circles and there isn't very helpful guides out there for this particular setup from what I gather, probably for some obvious reasons.

Note: I am effectively trying to run NAS in virtual machine and game on the same PC. Using RAID10 to consolidate all files from across 3 households with offsite retaining back up of important files to another PC.

Here I was thinking things would be straight forward......

Thank you for any input.

DO you need to use virtual box? Hyper-v will work fine. Or edit the config file for hdds bigger than 2tb

But id just setup file sharin gin windows, and raid with storage spaces in windows. Eimpler and more reliable.

That isn't exactly what I would consider "straightforward", especially virtualized gaming is easily compromised by unoptimized resource allocation; But even if so, as Electronics Wizardy said, do you really need to use VirtualBox? I am running my virtualization server on VMware ESXi 7.0U1 and according to my (limited) experience I believe it has fewer restrictions (up to like 1024TB of memory) and more complete feature sets. It's also free for personal use, and if you need vCenter Server to set up some of the connections you still have like 2 months to set it up for free. You may even try virtual XPEnology if thats your thing. But id probably still recommend a separate gaming system, depending on your CPU and other hardware.

I am fairly new to networking, I don't think I fully understand what I am trying to accomplish regarding what software to use. I also don't understand how to edit config file to expand storage.

I have already setup RAID 10 with manage storage spaces in windows 10, shared and mapped as network drive. I cant seem to add the shared drive to synology assistant so I must be doing something wrong here.

What would be the best software to configure my RAID 10 host with native windows 10 boot accessible externally for personal cloud storage, back ups etc. Should I got the route of hyper-v with unraid etc. or stick with expenology. Just want to setup something once and access off site from other computers or phone as required.

Hope this makes sense and I'm not totally a lost cause.

Thanks again.

How do you want the storage to be accessable? ID just use smb, pretty well supported on lots of systems. If you want a nice web interface id fire up nextcloud in a vm.

Id just stilck with windows on the host, hyper-v and storage spaces works well.
