Super Cpu intensive games.

BloodWithIce

Are there any Pc games that use more than 4-6-8 cores? If yes, which ones?

A Game using more cores doesn't necessarily mean that it's CPU intensive.

But I've heard that frosbite is well optimized for multiple cores.

And the ARMA series is very demanding on your CPU, but I'm not sure if its well optimized for multi-core. But I remember it not being that good

Crysis 3 is said to be able to make use of at least 8 cores and takes full advantage of hyperthreading.  That is what I have gotten out of the what I have seen written on the net but none of it is by reliable sources so take it with a grain of salt.

Too many ****ing games!  Back log 4 life! :S

Arma 3 is very single core optimized.

Actually it has two threads I believe but still that's almost as bad.

Source games are pretty CPU intensive.

Crysis 3 puts my CPU up in the usage numbers quite a bit, same with bf4.

youtube.com/watch?v=_hcuYiqib9I he shows 100%. You'd notice higher cpu loads when you use a 2nd or 3rd card or when you upgrade from a gt 220 to a 780ti in Crysis 3.

Anyways BF3 does only take advantage of 4, BF4 6 only and Crysis 3 8 or more.

Also any game including 10 year old ones can use more than 20 cores, the problem with the most games we have they only have 2 major threads and all others are extremely minor not having any impact on your performance so you want to rewrite the game so the 2 major threads are split into 8 to take advantage of an octacore cpu. Hence why you see 6 sitting between 1-5% load and 2 cores nearly at its max.

Taking advantage doesnt equal using cores. There aren't that many apps that still contain one thread such as Superpi, notepad, windows calc, or some AI suite plugins like usb boost or turbvo evo whatsoever.

BF4 and Crysis 3 use all eight of my cores.

Nothing to see here - move along.

define "cpu intensive"
most people will happily say that a game is cpu intensive withou any definition.

cpu intensive by MY definition is something that really requires 2+ cores like bf4, it will evenly load 4 threads at 60% usage, in games like this you're very unlikely to be cpu bottlenecked unless your only using a dual core.

cpu limited by MY definition is something like wow or age of empires or simcity 4, these games only use 1 or sometimes 2 cores at 100% and cores 3, 4, 5, 6.... are doing sweet f*** all, in these games your usuually CPU limited so your graphics card will be at 80% while 2 threads (or 1) are maxed out, in these games it doesnt matter wether you have a pentium dual core g3220 or a 4770k.
these games usually favour intels higher ipc which can be around 40% higher than amd's..

that said these games also usually run a billion fps anyway sop intel fanboys love to run around screaming that an i3 gets 120fps wheras an fx8350 "onyl" gets 90....

thankfully these 2005 games are slowly getting outdates and modern games are now learning that "hey we're not all using core 2 duos anymore", and now evenly scale to N cores, even simcity, minecraft, world of tanks, skyrim etc games that were previously single threaded now evenly distribute threads and now become gpu limited, so a gpu upgrade can now actually make sense.

edit: will slowly make a list of both types.
cpu intensive (evenly scales across N cores)
bf2, bf3, bf4
crysis 3 (maybe crysis 2)
moh warfighter
minecraft
world of tanks (more or less)
arma 3 (maybe arma 2) as demanding as crysis 3 from what i've seen.
bioshock infinate.
gta 4
skyrim

CPU limited (poorly threaded titles)
quake 3

Borderlands 2 with PhysX on high. And PhysX on the CPU.

Won't make a lot of sense especially if on a higher end GPU.
