so i been researching a bit about making a fast windows 98 pc and was wondering what your thoughts were on the idea. if there a form on here about 98 link it.

maybe im trying too hard and i should just buy w/e and bee happy with it? i have a 6800 ultra but watching computer phill and a few other youtube videos i just dont no. i no the hi end best in slot stuff is really expensive.

do i find a pcie mb and try to find devices that has 98 drivers or do i look for an mb that has 98 support i do have a list but i dont no what to do. im not the best at installing drivers and i no 98 is ALL about he driver.

there some old games that only work with 98 i would like to play and there hard to find or get working on non 98 os. plus i like building pcs but hate installing drivers,,,

do i

a: use my agp 6800 ultra and find an agp mb with 98 support or

b: atemp a pcie build and find ether net, sound card pci that has 98 support and look for an mid tear pcie gpu that has 98 support. and use like a core 2 duo or even better? tho i head windows 98 only works with single core.

The conclusion states that there isn't really an ultimate PC, as the final build had lots of bugs with no restarting, BSoDs, etc.

Windows 98 can't use more than a single CPU core. Windows NT (some versions) can and so can Windows XP. Most games that worked on 98 can be made to work on XP and honestly a lot of games that worked on 98 can also be made to work on Windows 7 or 10. Sometimes it takes some patching, sometimes you need to run them in VM, and sometimes DOSBOX is your best friend for much older games.

I'd personally be going with option a. A ~3.2GHz P4 would be plenty enough when paired with your 6800 Ultra. Just be sure you're getting a board with good compatibility, and I also probably wouldn't be pushing above 256-384MB of RAM, even though you can technically go with more.

Once you're past all of the installation phase, 512 is usually fine. But there also just really isn't a reason to have that much RAM with 98, period. Minimal to no gain for increased probability of headaches... I'll pass.

so what will incress the fps? 1 core cpu at 3.8 512ram and ssd? i mean i dont need 300fps 60 fps is fine for me at like 1080p if the game can handle that.

As is the case with any game, it depends on the game really. Though if you whack any later-run P4 at it with a higher clock speed, you'll probably be at the mercy of your 6800 Ultra.

Pentium 4? That's overkill, I have a Pentium 1 with win 98 which is *very* fast (plays games at 60fps without a GPU even lol) you might as well put a threadripper in there! 😜

Pretty much everything you can find, honestly. 98 will have no idea what the hell to do with a board as new as you're planning. From what I've been finding though, maybe it'll be better to hunt down a somewhat later Socket 478 board. Seems like most of the 775 boards are either picked clean or stupidly expensive, and the Asus P4V800D-X seems to be reasonable enough. Has drivers for LAN, audio, and USB.

Still pretty expensive, mind you, but such is the life of older hardware.

well i found mb that are 775 and have "all the driver" on the web site thow say it and there being there are too different things....

i was just looking for the best mb with all of them but if i cant get all the drivers it sounds like if i get an mb that has extra pci slots i can buy a 98 sound card,Ethernet. thow i read that new stuff will mosty like ony have ethernet driver. that being said i would think chipset driver are also importend so ill have to look for mb with chipset, sata, and maybe usb.

seem like i can find a ddr2 mb 775.

ya 98 didn't have usb it has ps2 and w/e the big massive plug was before ps2. so you have to manually install every driver... soujnd like there are sofware you can get to get usb drivers to insall on 98 but what that is i dont no or how to install it.
