Them sitting idle and unpowered doesn't cause them to degrade in any measurable quantity. By using them, they will eventually fail, but they may last for 3 weeks or they may last for 20 years -- there is no rule for that.

I have a few internal sata ones and I use one regularly, how long do they last? do they degrade over time or only loose lifespan when you use them? do they have any moving parts?
