I think my 290x is underperforming.

Ronaldspiers

Hi all, first time poster here. Ive watched linus for years though.

Anyway, i built a new gaming pc this week.  it has an i5 4670K an MSI Gaming R9 290x OC, ASUS z87- plus mobo and an xfx 650 W modular PSU.

I wanna start by saying ithe card is performing really well.  But its performing what seems to be at the same level as my friends computer. he has an i5-4570 and a GTX 770.    And in games like planetside 2 and Battlefield 3 our Framerates are pretty equal at the exact same video settings.   I realise I am going to come across like a bit of a douche maybe.  But I just feel like I should be getting more FPS than I am.

In the enw Thief I ran the benchmark at 1080p with same setting Slick used on his youtube video and my average FPS was 63. Which was 20 or so lower than the GTX 770 used in that benchmark.

Am I missing something?  or is this just the luck of the draw with the card?

Thanks for reading

PS2 and BF3 are pretty CPU intensive games. Check the temps of your CPU and see if it is throttling your clock speeds. Also check if your GPU is throttling at all but it seems unlikely considering the good cooler on your card.

Hmm..  Do you have that silent mode and "gaming mode" switch on the card? Is it on silent mode?

performance can be hard to put a finger on what you might feel as slow another person can feel as awesome.

best way to be subjective is to record a 120second fraps runthrough at the same point,

thief is a terribly coded game which is very badly threaded (check task manager and see if your maxing out any cores).

bf3 is gpu limited (sorry but it is not cpu heavy unless you mean it evenly uses 4 cores in which case yes it is..) so bf3 would be a good test of gpu performance.

make sure both of you re at the same resolution and settings, i know you've said you are but something like on of you having 4xAA while the other doesnt can be easy to miss.

make sure you have msi afterburner running so you can check clock speeds through out the game, set your core clock to 1000mhz and fan speed to 60% and max temp to 90 and see if that helps.

Hi all thanks for the replies. I am using a mobile so Its hard to quote posts.

My CPU temperature has never gone above 55 celsius playing games and my GPU temperature is usually around 75 celsius

I was a bit aprehensive to use MSI afterburner incase I accidently did something to the card. I am still quite new to all this :)

The card is set to OC mode which is a 1040MHz clock speed. One thibg I have noticed though is that the card rarely ever geita to the 1040MHz. It will usually fluxuate between 850 and 950 MHz occasionally spiking to the stated 1040.

Thanks again

Is there a switch on the card?
