I'll be picking up the 6300 and G46 at Microcenter, and I'm giving him my old Zalman. It looks alright for what it is, it's really for gaming on the side.

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.

Migth want to add an ssd.

that's a joke right

So he texted me and told me he wants it to be upgradable. I'm shocked he knew PCs could do that.

Here's a slightly better rig with more potential for upgrades.

CPU:  Intel Core i3-4340 3.6GHz Dual-Core Processor  ($129.99 @ Micro Center)
Motherboard:  MSI Z87-G41 PC Mate ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($39.99)
Memory:  Kingston Blu 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory  ($64.99 @ Newegg)
Video Card:  MSI GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB Video Card  ($169.99 @ Amazon)
Case:  Zalman Z11 Plus ATX Mid Tower Case  (Purchased For $0.00)
Power Supply:  Rosewill Green 630W 80+ Certified ATX Power Supply  ($49.99 @ Amazon)
Total: $512.94
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)

No with ssd being dirt cheap these days. You can get a 120 gb ssd for something like  50$. And since there were 40$ left in the budget.

An SSD with a cloned OS partition can be seen as a future upgrade if he determines that's something for him.

Some people are fine without one.

that said you can find a 50$ OS only SSD around on the interwebs someplace.

btw if you can find a way to bench your chip and stability test it with Y clock @X voltage I would definitely consider picking it up in the future.
