Need feedback on PC parts I've picked for an upgrade on my gaming rig, and the build of a homeserver.

Budget (including currency): 10 000 NOK (~1150 USD)

Country: Norway

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for:

Current computer for gaming is used for games, streaming and the like / Planned homeserver will be used for watching movies over the cloud, cloud storage and game server hosting.

Some games I'm planning to host, preferabely minimum two server at a time if needed:

ArmA 3

Minecraft

Rust

Other than that, I want the system to handle running most of the time.

The gaming rig will be running on 1080p 60Hz screens, mostly games similar to Doom Eternal, Hitman 2 and Battlefront 2 in quality.

Other details

My plan is to: Take older parts from my gaming rig, use those in building up a homeserver for the beforementioned uses and then upgrading the parts that have been moved from the gaming rig. I was originally planning to keep it all in the gaming rig and building the server from scratch but came to the conclusion that I might as well take it all at once when I'm first at it.

I have gotten some questions why I'd build a PC to use as a server and not just a corporate level server or the like, but the reason is really that I find computers a lot easier to understand, and after much back and forth I've found it way easier to do it this way at least the first time around. Should I find out later on I want a "proper" server I'll always find a use for the PC server.

PC Build

I currently have a gaming computer with the following components, I will be putting the upgrade I'm planning to do in parentheses with red text, the rest will stay as is for now. Parts that will be moved to the server will be in blue.

I'm not including storage space in the gaming rig as it'll stay,

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 8GB

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600X (AMD Ryzen 5 3600)

Ram: Unsure of brand, 8x2 GB Sticks (Corsair Vengeance LPX 32 GB (2x16 GB 3200 MHz))

MOBO: MSI B450 Gaming Plus (MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk)

PSU: Cooler Master MasterWatt 550W Bronze

Case: Phanteks Eclipse P600S

Server Build

All parts that aren't blue will be purchased, excluding the case that I have from before.

Blue components are taken from the gamiing PC.

GPU: XFX 590 Fatboy (This is not being purchased, but I had it in "storage")

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600X

Ram: Corsair Vengeance LPX 32 GB (2x16 GB 3200 MHz)

SSD: Kingston SSDNow 480 GB

HDD: Seagate IronWolf 4 TB (1x, to start with)

MOBO: MSI B450 Gaming Plus

PSU: Corsair RM550X Gold

Case: Fractal Design Define C

* In the future I'll be purchasing RAID as a security measure.

Conclusion

I'm looking for any feedback on these upgrades and builds, does it sound like a decent setup? the motherboard for the rig is the one I've been the most unsure about but I came to the conclusion it might be the most feasible.

I have a seperate question, if any can answer it. Is it possible to do a workaround with only a single displayport and wanting to play VR without having to disconnect the monitor all the time to plug the headset in?

Thank you for all help! If any more information I've forgotten is necessary I'll add it ASAP.

  • The server doesnt have a dedicated GPU or an iGPU so you wont be able to use it
  • I suggest reusing the current ram sticks for the server and then after running your game servers decide if 32GB is necessary

Other than that what monitor(s) do you have? Resolution and refresh rate. Also what games are you planning on playing on the gaming PC and at what resolution/fps

SPEC LIST:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5950X w/ NZXT Kraken Z73 360mm Liquid Cooler
  • GPU: NVIDIA RTX 3090 FE
  • RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB (4 x 8GB) 5000MHz CL18
  • Motherboard: MSI MEG X570 Godlike
  • SSD: Samsung 980 Pro PCIe 4.0 1TB (x3)
  • PSU: Corsair AX1600i
  • Case: NZXT H710
  • Monitor: Alienware AW2521H 25inch 360Hz 1ms

Oh snap, I forgot to mention I have a XFX 590 GPU laying around I can plug in.

Reusing the ram is a good idea, I'll do that definitely!

I have two 1920 monitors, ill update with refresh rate when i get home, I'm not very good with picking. A lot of the new games, Doom, COD etc.

As I said, I'll update as soon as I can!

Thanks for the reply.

Hi, I checked. As mentioned, two 1080P monitors, resolution is at 1920x1080 with a 60 Hz refresh rate. Trying to hit 60 FPS minimum at the beforementioned resolution.

Alright so getting 60fps at 1080p in doom and cod should be easy with your 2070 and a ryzen 3600. I'd recommend pairing the 3600 with 16gb (2x8gb) ddr4 3200 or 3600 mhz cl16 ram

So what I've found so far is good then? I forgot to add the MHz of the PC, but it's the same I was planning to purchase for the server at 3200 MHz. That'll be fine then?

Yea 3200mhz CL16 is great for the new gaming PC build but the server PC will be fine carrying over the existing ram. You could carry over your entire current PC for the server PC except for the graphics and drives.

Yeah, that's the plan. Gold PSU for the server though for the savings. Everything looks alright then? Any opinions on the motherboard?
