Onboard Chips:

Realtek ALC885/889/892: 2 Ohms

Realtek ALC1150 w/ TI TPA6120A2 headphone amp: 10 Ohms (as seen on Asus ROG Formula boards, known as SupremeFX.  Note that some ROG boards only feature the ALC1150 chip and not the TI TPA6120A2 Op-Amp.  Confused yet?)

Realtek ALC1150 w/ TI NE5532 headphone amp: 0.3 Ohms (as reported in the Op-Amp spec sheet, still unconfirmed.  ASRock's "Purity Sound" featured on the Z87 Extreme4 and up)

Copied from the FAQ found here: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/18617-the-audio-boards-frequently-asked-questions-pre-answered/

Looks like anywhere from .3 to 10 ohms for the few ones listed.

What is the average impedance of on board audio, or does it depend.

Low enough that it should be fine with pretty much every headphone. Unless you find some weird ass headphone with 5 ohms or something lol

Motherboards that advertise a "600 ohm headphone amp" generally have a 10 ohm output impedance. Realtek/VIA chips are generally under 4 ohms. I think the one exception so far has been from ASRock, but I forget the branding they've stuck on it.

That would be the Purity Sound. and they're doing it the proper way, with that 0.3 ohm output impedance. ASRock is growing on me...

I was talking to a mate the other night about the Asrocks, he just built a pc for someone using one as I have and we have both come o the conclusion that Asrock are definitely becoming the next best thing in Motherboards if they aren't already.

They're definitely putting money into R&D instead of marketing like the other brands.

And as in the Tom's hardware article, keep in mind I'm just going off the chip spec. Op-amps can have large resistors in front of them, so things may vary brand to brand and board to board. Honestly I should change that in the FAQ to make it more clear.

Implementation is everything.

1 question, is the lower the impedence better or higher?

Generally lower is "better" due to the damping factor. Ideally you want your output impedance to be at least 8x lower than the impedance of your headphones. This means for 32 ohm headphones you would want an output impedance 4 ohms or less.

More info about how output impedance & headphone impedance relate to the damping factor: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Headphone_amplifier#Output_Impedance
