The 7.1 audio is likely referring to the SP.DIF connector.

So the only way to get 7.1 must be by using a SPDIF compatible device ?

That and external/internal audio cards.

this board via 3.5mm only has:

- Line out (2 speakers, green)

- Rear speaker (2 speakers, Black)

- Sub woofer (Orange)

of course lacking side speaker (gray).

Keep in mind some "7.1" audio devices don't need all these connectors. Specifically gaming headsets. They advertise 7.1 audio, which is achieved usually via software and you connect them via USB

The best way to get multichannel audio is to use HDMI through your GPU.

That is also the only way to get things like dolby atmos and other modern codecs.

You can specify what each port does, or atleast should be able to.

Open up Realtek's Software and check what each port is assigned to do. Then re-assign what each port does to get 7.1 output.

LTT's Resident Porsche fanboy and nutjob Audiophile.

Main speaker setup is now;

Mini DSP SHD Studio -> 2x Mola Mola Tambaqui DAC's (fed by AES/EBU, one feeds the left sub and main, the other feeds the right side) -> 2x Neumann KH420 + 2x Neumann KH870

(Having a totally seperate DAC for each channel is game changing for sound quality)

You can get 7.1. Not over SPDIF, SPDIF does not support 7.1, this can be done over HDMI and over RCA cables.

I have this mobo and I used 3.5mm to male RCA cables to wire to my amp. You can also use realtek to check your output is 7.1 and get it to play tones from each speaker.

Additionally, most amps have pretty solid surround sound algorithms so you'll be able to upscale less channels into surround with stuff like Neo:6 and Plii.
