Computer randomly shuts down & reboots while gaming.

refinedskillz

Hi all,

My computer shuts down randomly while under load. It seemed to only start happening with one game, and I thought it could be my HDD, since my HDD is quite old. I bought a new drive and set up a RAID 1 array in windows - it made no difference. I tried reseating my GPU , I thought it could just be loose over time but to no avail (My GPU drivers are up to date). I also tried to flash my bios, but this comes up when I go to the support page for my board.... (https://prnt.sc/whj985) , so I can't. My components are partially used, here's the speclist.

- AMD Ryzen 5 1600U (used, excellent condition, bought last year.)

- Nvidia GTX 980Ti (used, decent condition, bought december 2019 and used in tandem with my old FX 8350 setup.)

- ASUS Prime B450-A (Bought new)

- Ballistics DDR4 (16GB 2 x 8GB 2666mhz) (Bought new)

- EVGA 650GS Supernova "Gold Standard" PSU - 650w (Bought new in 2015)

- Samsung 850 EVO 250gb (bought new in 2015)

I feel like it's software related, as my components were all working fine together until this month. Maybe my PSU draw is past the limit? I don't know how to check.  Thanks for all the help.

Edit - My PSU's power draw. https://prnt.sc/whjg9w

Edit 2 - There is also this defect with my GPU https://prnt.sc/whjlm4

Ryzen 5 1600 - GTX 980 Ti - Broke.

Can you run a stress test on your CPU and GPU while monitoring temps?

The components are definitely not drawing over 650 watts, closer to 350 under load.

But there might be a defect with the power supply that causes it to shut down. What type of shut down is it? Just straight to black, all components off?

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

Its straight to black and my computer restarts. It's exactly the same as just randomly pressing the reset switch.

Aida 64 does that. Although its not as demanding as Prime95 or Furmark its a good way to see if your PC would even survive that and with what temps

Isnt that a CPU only benchmark?

You can stress your GPU with Aida as well, but Furmark is the way to go.

Run them at the same time. Monitor temps with HWMonitor.

Sounds a lot like a power supply issue, you might want to borrow a friend's power supply to make sure.

Just ran furmark, and before I even got to read the temps, my PC shut down, I think that confirms its the PSU.

Not necessarily, but it's the cheaper component to replace and then test again lol.

I had a somewhat similar problem last year. My PC automatically rebooted while gaming, eventually leading to BSOD's. I did stress tests and they seemed to work, sometimes could game for a couple hours and then it happened again. Eventually I did the stress test again and the fps were very low. I didn't build it, so sent it back and they said something was wrong with my gpu so I had to replace it. Strangely, it started with just rebooting and became worse after a few days.

Idk, feels like it is, the only reason it could be anything else is if the temp is too high no?

Could it possibly be a loose connection?

That PSU is quite old, maybe better to try a new one. I mean "randomly shuts down" usually points to psu or motherboard anyway, and psu is just way more likely.

the motherboard could also be the problem, or even an issue with the wall power. it's not 100% sure that it's the PSU, but that is the most likely culprit.

it would be better to try a new / known to be working power supply... unless that's what you meant.

Using a possibly failing psu can take out more components, personally wouldn't want to risk it...
