upgrade from i5 8400

A friend of mine is considering an upgrade for his gaming build. Currently he is running i5 8400 on a B360 Aourus Gaming 3 Wifi, MSI Gaming X Trio RTX 3060Ti with 2x8 gb Ballistix 3200mhz cl16, 500gb samsung evo plus m.2 and an 700 watt be quiet PSU.

He has been having issues with inconsistent fps in games and has been thinking whether his CPU is not a bottleneck therefor he is considering an upgrade but he is on a slightly tight budget.

 

So he wants to stay on the B360 platform and is considering either i7 9700 (or 9700) vs cheaper i5 9600k. Which one would you suggest, or maybe what other upgrade path could you suggest?

He should definitely consider upgrading his CPU.

Go for the i7 - although he should consider switching out mobo+cpu+ram in the future.

But would you suggest the 9700 or 9700f or should he consider the K variant for higher clocks?

 

I thought that i5 9600k migh be better cause it has a higher base clock of 3.7ghz but with fewer cores in comparison to 3.0ghz of the 9700 and 9700f.

how much is the 9700?

AMD is now better. either 5600x or 3600 + new mobo.

Motherboard tier list. Tier A for overclocking 5950x. Tier B for overclocking 5900x, Tier C for overclocking 5800X. Tier D for overclocking 5600X. Tier F for 4/6 core Cpus at stock. Tier E avoid.

(Also case airflow matter or if you are using Downcraft air cooler)

The 9600k is 900pln (polish currency in $ thats around 245)

Normal 9700 is 1129

9700k is 1338

 

Getting a B550 + 3600 would be over his budget. The 3600 alone costs the same as the 9600k

9700 makes more sense then. Also make sure to updtae the bios for the b360 board to support 9th gen cpus.
