Hello,
I recently went through a local auction and found a user there who was bidding on quite cheap servers.
I found one that sells for 2500 CZK (= 115 USD).
I thought I'd throw in there, but I didn't give much hope that it would end up with such a low price.
But in the end I won the server.
But I still don't understand how he sells such a server at a low price. Couldn't someone tell me how it is possible that such a server offers so cheaply?

I don't know if I should pay for it or not.

This is an old, sandy bridge era server. It probably worked all those years and has finally been decommissioned.

Usually when a company is about to refresh their servers, they usually pay a company to recycle/get rid of the old stuff, and that's how you end up seeing such servers so cheap out there. If you didn't buy it, it would just be tossed away.

Those things are LOUD and quite power hungry. Do you need a server/have somewhere to store it? If so, then buy it, otherwise you're better off doing something else with that money.

They are old, slow, draw too much power and nobody wants them.

Most datacenters are already moving to DDR4 with more efficient machines, those thing must go, as cheap as possible.

For $115 its a bargain, you can add cheap DDR3 memories, build a nas, or game servers.

Or add a gpu, install windows and just use it as a regular pc.

Well it might be fun to play with for a while, but it's not going to be of much actual use.

I already have a home server at home, in which I have an intel core i5 4460, 16GB DDR3 and I think a 300W power supply. Do you think it will take more power than the exposed server or how much?

it will use a good amount more than that rig you have now. Id guess about 70w idle, anout about 120w under normal home server load.

Id only get it if you want to fill it with ram or play with datacenter hardware.

I like old servers and have a bunch of them. Their OOB management systems are nice to have. They usually have a lot of easily accessed drive bays and often can hot swap drives, so for a NAS they are convenient. Many will have redundant power supplies. ECC RAM is pretty much standard. Parts are readily available and can be replaced easily. The only downside is noise and power, but it's not a big deal IMO.
