CPU throttles after a while of max usage

Go to solution Solved by jones177,

That is the Intel power limit.

On my ASUS Hero I had to go into bios then hit the cmos button on the I/O shield than the select either F1 or F3.

If I go through the bios screen MCE is enabled and that heats up my i9 10900k to the point where Thermal Velocity boost does not work.

Other motherboards should have similar methods of doing this.

So, I have an Intel Core i7-10700K, when I use Folding@Home, it uses the CPU at 100 %. The clock is at 4,66 GHz (which should be normal), but after a while (about maybe 10 seconds) it drops to 4,33 GHz. I would like to ask, if that is normal (maybe that the first 10 seconds it is in turbo mode)?

I have not done any overclocking to the CPU. My cooler is Noctua NH-U12A.

I also looked into Intel XTU, when it starts the TDP goes to about 170 W and then it drops to 125 W (which is what the manufacturer says), so it probably is normal?

Thanks for replies

Yes it's normal, you need to remove the power limits in the BIOS since it doesn't seem like the mobo you have does it by default. Also you didn't mention the CPU temp.

The little problem is that the CPU temps when at 125 W are OK (a bit below 70 degrees Celsius), but when it boosts it goes to the higher 70s and lower 80s, then it drops (because the turbo stops).
