About the "ps5 upgrade" on ps4 games.

So I am waiting for that new SSD that can work on ps5 to upgrade my sons ps5 storage. Meanwhile i have all his ps4 games on an external storage drive. Being that ps5 games cannot run of this, what would the "upgrade" do. Would it basically download a full copy of the game directly on the ps5 of the upgraded version? Would it simply just add the "upgraded" files to connect with the ps4 version on the external hard drive? 

Adding if it helps. I am speaking of borderlands 3, seems like you can only access your ps4 saves by uploading them and adding them to the ps5 upgrade?

So after a few minutes researching this, the PS5 doesn't seem to have a "smart-delivery-like" systems as the XBox, so you probably need to redownload the game from the store to get the upgrade, and as you already know, you can only run PS5 games from the internal storage.

real bummer you can't just unplug the external drive with your games on it and plug it into the ps5
