Computer will not boot. Have tried everything?

8 month old PC won’t boot. Didn’t use it for about 3 or 4 months, then put my 1080 in it 2 months ago to use it as a stronger gaming machine than what I had been using. Working fine all last night, and even this morning before work I did something on it real quick. I shut it down and went to work.

I come home tonight, press the power button, and nothing happens. :( No lights, beeps, or fans no matter how many times I press the power button. I do notice that if I unplug the power cable, turn psu off, wait 10-15 seconds, plug cable back in, as soon as I switch the psu back on the mobo lights lights flicker on for a half second. I cannot get them to flash again unless I repeat those steps. Also doing those steps will turn on the 2 white LEDs on the gpu indicating the power cables are plugged in correctly, but the second I press the case power button they go off and I cannot get them back unless I repeat above steps.

3950x

x570

1080

4 x 16gb ram

650w psu

Like I said, PC has worked fine since I built it. Nothing has changed outside of the gpu install 2 months ago. I do not move it at all either.

Things I have tried:

-Used a different PSU (750w) that I know works. Nothing changed.
-Tried different outlets

-Removed gpu and all drives

-Replugged all cables and made sure they are securely in

-Removed mobo battery, tried to boot without and then again with it

-Removed all memory sticks except 1 in the first slot

No matter what I try, I can only briefly get the mobo lights to flash by repeating the steps I said above. Motherboard looks fine and healthy, nothing looks blown or like it was leaking  Not sure what else to do.

Any advice?

Hope your PC wasn't damaged by some disturbance from the power from the wall/grid?

Maybe motherboard or something else is ded?
Are you able to post into BIOS?

Try two ram sticks by themselves maybe, or something?
Else if a store could test the motherboard for you, if that might be the issue.
Although PSU could be something up with that too, but maybe not it being the issue?

Also you haven't installed something recently, or if a windows update did something (if you use windows).

Although it would likely not do something like this, so hopefully you can get your motherboard checked.

1 - Like I said, I was at work, so I couldn’t say if there was any kind of power surge. PC was plugged into a surge protector, and everything else plugged into that surge protector seems to be fine. And no cannot post, just barely get lights to flash for a half second. I tested with another PSU, so I don’t feel it can be that. I also don’t see a windows update causing a computer to be unable to post at all, or get into bios.

and with the holidays....getting someone to test it isn’t going to be a quick process 😭

Unplug the front header connections to the motherboard. Try to sort the power button pins with a flat blade screw driver to see if it will power on, just to eliminate the power button as the problem.

I had something kinda similar to that happen with my secondary system. it went into sleep mode when I went to do something, but it wouldn't come out of sleep mode and wouldn't power up in general when I came back 5 minutes later, no power surge. It turned out the board would only boot when CMOS was cleared to turn it on, though it could just be a fluke. The board still works to this day, and is still in the system, its just very annoying. You could try that, but its iffy whether or not that would work.

I'd try the single ram stick in each slot as said above, changing out the stick each time till the system either boots or you get through all the sticks, just to see if maybe a ram stick or two died and is the reason your system isn't booting. If that isn't the case, you either have a bad CPU or a bad motherboard, and with the way the board just lights up then immediately shuts down, it sounds more like a bad mobo. It sounds like you might just need to RMA your board. I know it sucks, but it might be your only option

Your talking about the 1/2 pin power switch, reset switch, and front LED pins, correct? I did unplug them from the motherboard and replugged them back in, making sure they were well seated. Maybe I’ll try turning system on with them unplugged...

I did take and leave the battery out for a solid 2 minutes, pressing the power button to drain any remaining power. I have also pressed the reset switch numerous times throughout this whole night. Haven’t tried holding it down though :s so maybe I’ll give that a go. I’ll try with other memory sticks, but it just seems doubtful.

Hope this is not AMD related on their tech side?

can you give us full detail on your parts. what RAM exactly, what motherboard, what power supply, what brand of video card, what case and CPU cooler?

-G skill rip jaws 3600

-gigabyte Aorus pro wifi x570 rev 1.1

-evga 650w bronze (also tried Eva 750w bronze that I know works)

-asus rog strix 1080

-bigass cooler master fan/heat sink for cpu

-some shit $40 lian li case. Very basic. I had another pc for gaming and this was just a machine built for a very specific job before I put my 1080 into it.

i run hwMonitor almost daily while and temps for cpu/gpu never get above 70.

If you're getting lights to flash on the mobo after plugging in the PSU before touching anything else I would probably start by troubleshooting the PSU.  There might be a thread here on how to do that, but here's the top hit from Google below.  It's pretty simple and would be where I'd start before ripping into anything deeper.

Like I’ve said, I used another PSU that I know works and for the same results. I don’t feel like I should need to do this. Plus I don’t have any paper clips.

If it's not keeping the LEDs in the mobo lit, then there's a power issue somewhere.  If it's not in the PSU, then it's most likely in your mobo.  Usually if it's a failure beyond that it'll keep the power lights on at a minimum.

Thinking about it more, swap the reset button and power button connections on the motherboard. It's a temporary switch either way so one will work for the other. That will eliminate the power switch. If you still got nothing, time for a new motherboard.
