Hello!

So I'm planning on building my own PC and after some research this looks like a good build to me (I might switch out the R9 280x for an 290 if it drops in price soon).

CPU:  Intel Core i5-4670K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($219.00 @ Amazon)
Motherboard:  MSI Z87-G45 Gaming ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($129.99 @ Newegg)
Memory:  Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory  ($79.99 @ Newegg)
Video Card:  MSI Radeon R9 280X 3GB Video Card  ($424.98 @ Amazon) (Which I will be able to get for $340)
Case:  NZXT H440 (Red/Black) ATX Mid Tower Case  ($119.80 @ Amazon)
Other: Be Quiet Dark Rock Advanced C1 ($80.00) (CPU Fan)
Other: Bitfenix Red Sleeved Cable's ($40.00)

So what do you guys think of it? Does it look good, or does it need improvement? Any idea's?

It looks good to me, there's nothing wrong with it. If it were me, I'd get a 770 instead of a 280x but that's just my personal preference... but since you're able to get the 280x much cheaper, they aren't really comparable anymore. Looks really good, you'll be happy with it i'm sure!  :D

I wouldn't want a 770, since they perform less in a lot of games than the 280x. But I'm not sure if I would buy an second hand 780, I would rather go buy an 290 instead, since it's almost equivalent to it and it will have full warranty.

What will this build be used for?  If it were me, I would probably get 16GBs ram, but this is just me ;D

Isn't that a bit useless? I know no games that require 16GB of RAM?

Sort of not really. When I was loading texture packs into Skyrim my system was taking forever to unpack the files and copy them into the game files. More RAM would have helped a lot.

Thats the only time it rwally mattered to have more RAM that I can remember.

Edit:

In terms of running a game, yea it doesnt make much difference. If developers and modders stop putting memory limits in their games then it would make a difference which will probably happen since some games require 4GB which means you need 64bit which means you can have a lot more memory floating around.

Probably won't be playing Skyrim a lot, so I'll likely not mod it. If I ever need more RAM (for video edditing) I will probably get 2x4GB more. More than 16GB is kinda unnecessary unless I will render lots of video's for professional use.

I personally would've gone ASUS but MSI is also totally fine (Considering the better onboard LAN)

Other than that, you look set to go

One of the reasons why I chose that motherboard :)

Sorry for posting it in the wrong sub-forum. I saw someone else post something similar, so I posted it here.

I'll be mainly using it to game on high settings (hopefully with eyefinity) and maybe record some things.

I do like the R9 290 included, but they consume more power than the PSU will deliver. From some benchmarkings they run 350-400W. PCPP rates the build without GPU 198W, so it would be short on power. Might change the cooler out, but first want to see some benchmarkings of it.

No it doesn't..  The psu is plenty for the system. http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/graphics/2013/11/05/amd-radeon-r9-290-review/9

Ah. Didn't read the total, explains a lot. But 550W seems not that much for a PSU. Is it worth taking a platinum over a gold PSU when you'll need to upgrade it sooner?

Why would you need to upgrade it?

Usually when you upgrade your PC you won't have to upgrade the PSU, since it lasts longer

...and?

And you don't need a new PSU, so you can spend that money on other parts

How is it different here? I don't see why you would need more than the 550w plat can provide in the near future.

Because GPU's start using up more power for newer versions? Because you can overclock stuff well? Adding more HDD's SSD's?

If you haven't noticed, newer cards tend to improve on power consumption. Even for oc'ing, it''s plenty. Things like drives use very little power compared to the graphics card.

Do watch..
