Threadripper 3969x with 256GB RAM

Hey everyone,

So I've got this crazy built we want to do at our lab for calculations. We do not need GPU power but A LOT of ram and a fast processor.

 

Build:

Housing: Corsair obsidian series 750D Full tower

CPU: ryzen threadripper 3960x @ roughly 4.2GHz

Mobo: Asus rog strix trx40-e gaming motherboard

RAM: 256gb corsair vengeance 3000MHz

PSU: Corsair 1000W RMx series

Cooling: masterliquid ML360R rgb  for CPU and extra 120mm fans in the housing

Thermal Paste: MX-4 Extreme

 

I'm a bit worried about cpu thermal throttling (especially when slightly overclocked). Also I'm not sure about the extra heat produced by the crazy amount of RAM.. Does this heat up the CPU a lot? 

We want to do calculations for multiple days in a row under full CPU-load.

 

Help is appreciated A LOT here :)

Ram will produce some heat but not a lot, even at such quantity. It'll be spread over the modules. As long as there is some airflow in the case over the ram, it'll be fine.

 

Especially since you're doing long computations, think again about overclocking. At the least, expect to do a lot of testing to make sure it is stable. Last thing you want is a bad result after days of running.

seeing you have the budget why not go custom liquid cooling to keep that threadripper chilled? seeing as you'll be using it for long durations with no cooldown periods it seems like having 2 radiators might help with cooling and keeping the CPU efficient?

Yes I was thinking about custom liquid cooling, but I've never done it before, therefore a bit scared about doing it wrong...

How can you install 2 radiators for cooling the CPU? Does this mean that I could somehow use 2 of those "masterliquid ML360R rgb" or just one but install extra fans on it?

 

Also: As I've learned, there is no integrated graphics card on the threadripper, meaning I need an extra GPU. Since we are not doing any calculations on the GPU it would come natural to me that I don't need to buy a good GPU? So I could just go with e.g. a Geforce GT710 instead of a GTX 1050Ti?

You'd have to go to a custom setup. The "all in one" coolers like this are not designed to be modified. It is possible, but at that point, you might as well go custom anyway.

You just need a GPU good enough to display a picture. Be particularly careful if you want high resolutions as older cards might struggle, for example they might only output 4k30.

I'm researching right now about custom water cooling loops. Do you have any recommendations, or things I should keep in mind (thinking about our rig)?

 

About the GPU: It really is only meant to display pictures on a screen. Even HD ready would be enough hereto read the calculations results ;)

Okey f***k it we went all-in.

We ordered a full custom water cooled loop including an asus rog strix rtx 3080.
