Time for a CPU upgrade?

I just bought and downloaded Star Wars Battlefront 2 (the new one) and the framerate wasn't very good at anything above medium settings. My specs:

Ryzen 5 2600x at 4.05 Ghz

Gigabyte RTX 2070 Super OC

Corsair Vengeance Pro RGB 2x8gb 3200mhz

650 Watt 80+ gold PSU

MSI B450 Gaming Pro Carbon AC

Adata SU655 960gb

 

I was thinking that maybe the slowest parts of my PC now are the SSD and the CPU... Which one would benefit the performance more with an upgrade?

Are you gaming at 1080? If that is the case then yes the CPU is a bottleneck, although an upgrade will not yield crazy performance. If you want to upgrade the R5 5600x would be my only recommendation, going to a 3600 would be a disappointing upgrade. That said as you move to higher resolution the load becomes more GPU bound (when gaming).

 

Your SSD is DRAM-less, which will hurt it the most, fast read writes for gaming do not matter, but having DRAM cache does.

I'm running at 1080p on a slightly older samsung monitor, OC'd to 75hz. Currently, on medium settings, I'm getting 50-60 fps with regular stuttering and freezing in game, but any higher settings and it goes down to ~30 fps or so. So you're saying that it would be better to buy a better SSD, like a samsung 860 or something, and that should improve my performance?

Need that the NVMe/ssd will have TLC?

ryzen 2600 really not good today?

1080p and you are only getting 50-60FPS? Something is genuinely wrong here, with this hardware you should be getting 140FPS+ at 1080p. You have gremlins to workout. 

 

Samsung 860 is overpriced for what it is, this will not improve gaming performance or anything just faster constant loads. 

 

Work out you performance issues, do not throw parts at this build.

Depends on the drive yes.

It is still good, OP's issue is not the CPU, there are other issues considering the low performance (likely software related).

I have noticed some odd slowdowns recently... Occasional momentary hangups in programs like task manager or Chrome. Do you have any suggestions for troubleshooting?

Start my monitoring temps etc.

Yes. I went from an RX580 to this RTX 2070S a couple months ago. Temperatures all seem fine, CPU max of 55° usually, GPU max of 75-80. SSD and ram all seem to be good temps too...

Did you remove all drivers prior to installing the new ones for your 2070S? If not this could likely cause issues, very common issue. Remove ALL drivers using DDU, then re-install the Nvidia ones for your GPU. See if this changes anything.

I removed all AMD drivers, and deleted them, and deleted all old files for them and installed Nvidia drivers. I've swapped GPUs before. I also have all the latest driver and windows updates. Next steps?

Getting to the point where a fresh OS install might be required.

I found that bitdefender was constantly using around 25% cpu, 15% ram, and a little bit of gpu usage. I have uninstalled it, for now at least, and it seemed to have helped a little. I'm also looking at temps and at idle, cpu is 42°C, gpu is 55°C, ram is 42°C, and my SSD is 50°C... All of those seem a little bit high but not awful. I'm going to reset all BIOS settings and see what happens then.

I just realized... I turned on "hardware accelerated gpu scheduling" in windows settings a couple weeks ago, to see what it did. Should I try turning that off?

Temps seam reasonable at idle, under load though is what will matter the most.

That just means you are using your GPU more for basic use case when needed, technically this offloads from the CPU. But when gaming it should not matter. You can always see what it does though.
