not really, onboard audio should be good enough

"I've been mad for fucking years, absolutely years, I've been over the edge for yonks..."

"I've always been mad, I know I've been mad, like the most of us are...very hard to explain why you're mad, even if you're not mad..."

"There is no dark side of the moon really. Matter of fact it's all dark."

It really really depends... If you have decent above average headphones that will actually benefit from a better  more cleaner source, then sure. But if you don't you can get much cheaper usb headphones that provide great 7.1 surround sound, if that's what your after since you didnt say you listen to music.

I'm pretty sure motherboard manufacturers (or maybe just Realtek, or both) have been improving audio since sandy bridge released, some motherboards even support up to 600Ohms on the Haswell motherboards like the Z87 XPOWER from MSI.

Now comparing the audio quality with a new one is something I haven't done since I own an old motherboard (x58 ud7)

Intel Core i7 930 // GIGABYTE X58-UD7 rev1 // Corsair Dominator 3x4GB // GPU MSI 7870 // Fractal Design R4 // 256GB Samsung SSD 840 Pro 1TB Samsung SpinPoint 3TB Seagate Barracuda  // Corsair 1000W // Dell 2713H // Vortex Poker II Ducky DK9008 // Logitech G400s // SteelSeries Qck+ DotA 2 Edition // Swan D1080-IV Audioengine A5+ Audioengine S8 // ASUS Xonar Essence STX - Albums http://imgur.com/a/wkJSM#2 // http://imgur.com/a/V2idF#0

Your on-board sound should really be fine. If you do plan on getting a soundcard, most people will recommend an external one such as the Fiio E10, which will eliminate potential interference from the inside of your computer.

a sound card does not produce a notably better or more clearer source than onboard.

Really? I thought an external one did

There are just as many crappy usb dacs as there are sound cards.  SQ comes down to design not form factor.
