Unable to change monitor to anything above 60 Hz

D-Fault

Just got a new monitor and I'm unable to change to 144Hz, I have tried using both the HDMI that came with the monitor and a HDMI 2.0 but can't get it to work

Laptop: https://tmt.my/product/asus-rog-strix-g-g531g-dbq086t-gaming-laptop/ (has HDMI 2.0b)

Monitor: https://rog.asus.com/nz/Monitors/23-to-24-5-Inches/ROG-SWIFT-PG248Q-Model/ (has HDMI 1.4)

Both of these ports theoretically support 144hz, I have tried updating my monitor drivers and graphics card drivers but I can only get 60hz

Have you verified the laptop can output higher than 60Hz refresh rate from the hdmi port? Just because the port spec supports it doesn't necessarily mean the laptop supports outputting it.

Yes, by just searching "Can laptop output 144Hz" on google, you can see the top result is from ROG forums.

It might be that you cant output 144Hz from that HDMI. By the way, are you cloning the display? Have you tried only enabling the secondary display and then setting it to 144Hz?

From the monitor page:

1. 1920 x 1080 @ 180Hz only works with DP port. The HDMI port only supports 1920 x 1080 @ 60Hz.

if I am unable to use HMDI to get 144hz, is there any display port adapter or any other method I can use to get 144hz with my current laptop?

You need to quote or mention @The_russian, @Hold-Ma-Beer and @Tadrith , otherwise they get no notification and it is unlikely they see your reply.

For adapters, you can look into this topic:

This should be a direct link to "HDMI -> DisplayPort" adapters. The tl;dr answer is that you need an active adapter (not cheap). Make sure to read about the limitations of those. And I'd make sure the notebook can actually output 144 Hz over its HDMI port before buying anything.

~edit: Looking at the specs: https://rog.asus.com/my/laptops/rog-strix/rog-strix-hero-iii-g531-series/spec/

There is the following entry: 1x USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C support displayport / G-SYNC

So you should be able to connect your monitor with a USB Type-C to DisplayPort cable.

Remember to either quote or @mention others, so they are notified of your reply
