either 5th gen processor will get you more fps in gaming, but they only have this gen for upgrades, there likely wont be another generation on am4.

R5 5600x or r7 5800x vs is 10900k. What should I try to get for later upgrades? What would give me more fps?

Could've just looked at all the available reviews out there.

Buuuut to summarize... Intel 10th Gen has no place in gaming or multi-threaded workloads right now.

IPC on Ryzen 3000-series already surpassed Intel, but Ryzen was capped at around 4.2 ~ 4.4 GHz, while Intel clocked up to 5.2 GHz+.

Intel had the brute force frequency advantage.

Ryzen 5000-series comes with even MORE IPC improvements, and can ALSO now clock up to 4.8GHz+ ... so it's GG.

intel isn't competitive at all atm, people are just oc'ing their 5600x to 4.8 for 300bucks and they have the fastest gaming cpu (more cores help very little), zen 3 also benefits from 4x8gb on ram (extra 5-10%), a zen 3 cpu at 4.7-4.8 with cl14 3800 4x8 is equal to about 6.2ghz intel, it's not even close.

r7 5800x for me is the sweet spot, 6 cores is too low for me imo, but if $$ is a problem go for the 5600x.

Apparently it isn't about the number of sticks, but rather if the DIMM modules are Single-Rank or Dual-Rank.

Presently there is no competition between Intel and AMD in terms of performance. AMD is much better in every aspect. You can get a R7 5800X for more FPS. But it costs a lot more than the 5600X. If you only play games then I don't see any need for the 8-core processor. The AMD platform is slightly better for upgradability as the AM3 chipset could support 3 processors as compared to the 2 processors supported by all Intel chipsets. Your best bet for future upgradability will be to get an AM5 chipset. As for the competitiveness of Intel, you can wait for it's Rocket Lake 11th gen CPUs which are coming in the first quarter of 2021. I have heard rumors that they too have managed an IPC increase of 15%-20%. But, then also the Ryzen CPUs should be a much better value. I don't know if the Ryzen 5000 series still has stability issues, but if you are not really tech savvy then read up the reviews on the stability of the 5000 series platform before going for it. If they are not good go for Intel. Intel is very stable as it has been around for very long on top and on this architecture.
