Mix matching RAM

Go to solution Solved by porina,

ECC registered requires specific support to work at all, and you're not going to find that on consumer level boards.

I have 4x2 GB ram modules in a old system I was wondering if I can but sever ram in it it uses old DDR3 RAM. the ram is ECC registered but in the system I'm using it is not ECC registered would that affect anything?

You have to look for boards that explicitly claim ECC support and have a CPU that also supports ECC. Most consumer hardware doesn't.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

Yes, to be specific only server chipsets can run ECC reg.

example, Ryzen supports ECC memories, but not for ECC reg.

only Threadripper PRO and Epyc support ECC Reg.

Ryzen 5700g @ 4.4ghz all cores | Asrock B550M Steel Legend | 3060 | 2x 16gb Micron E 2666 @ 4200mhz cl16 | 500gb WD SN750 | 12 TB HDD | Deepcool Gammax 400 w/ 2 delta 4000rpm push pull | Antec Neo Eco Zen 500w
