Good Threadripper motherboard?

Hi,

 

What's a good motherboard for a Threadripper build? Any certain advantages or disadvantages on certain motherboards?

My goal is to upgrade to a Gen4 Threadripper processor eventually. So, it's essential for the build and motherboard to have an upgrade path to Gen4 when it's released.
I'm planning to get the cheapest Threadripper I can get my hands on for now while I wait. Do let me know if you know anywhere I can get used ones for cheap?

Also, are sTRX4 and sTR4 the same thing?

 

Some notes on the build:

• ATX or MATX form
• Minimum of 2 PCIe slots
• Minimum of 2 NVME M.2 drive slots - preferably 3
• Trying to minimize noise so limiting as many "moving parts" as possible.
• Custom loop for cooling

Still researching motherboards so do let me know if there are any good resources out there that might help me understand what makes a "good motherboard"

sTR4 socket (X399 chipset) For Zen and Zen+ based TRs (1xxx and 2xxx), sTRX4 socket (TRX40 chipset) for Zen 2 and later, Zen 3 based TRs (3xxx and maybe 5xxx). They are very different.

you likely can't because the new generation isnt out yet there arent people dumping there old CPUs. You can check out 3960X and see if anyone's selling them, I wont put my hopes up tho

Those highlighted green are excellent choices, yellow are somewhat cheaper but still ok boards. Dont bother with the magenta ones.

the 3 that i would recommend to anyone are the gigabyte trx40 designare, the gigabyte trx40 aorus xtreme (both for vrm and aesthetics), and the asus zenith ii extreme alpha (best all around)
