R5 5600 worth getting over 3600 for the extra cost?

I'm in the midst of upgrading my almost 9-year build (ivy bridge) to ryzen. I initially decided to go for 3600, and my b450 motherboard is on the way as I type this post. I was just wondering if I should just get the 3600 or I should hold out for the 5600. I understand the 5600 isn't released yet, with an expected launch date of early 2021, but I was just wondering if the 5600 would be worth waiting for, especially for the increase in price over the 3600.

As you can tell, I hold on to my components for a long, long time. Currently running a vega 56, and mainly play fps (CS:GO, Valorant), but would like to get into more games. Planning on doing data science tasks as well. Running 2560 x 1440 on a 144hz monitor, if it matters.

Thanks!

You won't be able to use a 5600 on a B450 board until January at the earliest. AMD is not supporting those chips on B/X 4XX motherboards until then.

Yeah, so I was thinking if I would just be better off saving the money and fixing up my system to use it asap, or is this like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that i should just wait for?

with PC hardware, I wouldn't ever say a once in a lifetime opportunity.. always bigger, better, newer things right around the corner. That said, the 3600 is still an amazing CPU. I would go with the 3600 in your situation and work towards upgrading your GPU. Thats where you will get the most gain in your system overall.

Did you mean a R5 5600 non-X that hasn't (to my knowledge) been officially launched yet?

I doubt the performance increment would be that noticable/significant to justify the price of the new CPU.

EDIT:

n/m; re-read the OP & saw more details I missed.

Did you test boot it, before you built in into the case?

WHY NOT...?!

I'd go with the 5600x if you hold onto your stuff for a long time. Probably should have gone with a B550 board as well TBH.

While NVME storage isn't necessary now, in a few years it likely will be, and you'll be left without.
