Issues With Downloading macOS Big Sur Reported

Random_Person1234

Summary

Apple publicly released macOS Big Sur today, and many issues while downloading it have been reported. For some people, the download fails and they have to start over, others say that it completely downloads and then kicks out an error. Some Macs running Catalina are also experiencing major slowdowns.  Apple's Developer site was also down, but it is now up and running again. Apple Pay, Apple Card, and iMessages are also listed as experiencing an outage. Some are also complaining that the Apple TV app is slow currently.

Quote

Apple has confirmed the issue with downloading macOS Big Sur on its System Status page saying “Users may not be able to download macOS Software Updates on Mac computers. The issue is currently being investigated.”

Quote

macOS 11 Big Sur is roughly 12GB in size and will take a bit to download. But even users with fast to very fast internet service are seeing estimates of 12+ hours all the way up to 7 days in some cases. That points to the issue likely being on Apple’s end.

My thoughts

I was going to download Big Sur on my mac today, but I guess that's gonna wait. I am typing this on my Catalina Mac and not experiencing any of the reported issues, such as apps not opening.

ocsp.apple.com is ...struggling to say the least right now (it's the anti-virus thing that uploads app hash when you start an app), you can avoid it by temporary adding

0.0.0.0 ocsp.apple.com

to your hostsfile using

sudo nano /etc/hosts

Just don't forget to remote it when their servers stabilize.

i mean the fact that it affected so much is imo, wouldnt you want your download servers separate from the servers for your Developer site, Apple Pay, Apple Card, and iMessages etc. Ig if its hosted in one datacentere it kind of makes sense, but still that shouldnt have happened

You're not wrong.. I mean, yeah, it's news, and embarassing for apple...but it's not really new news...."System crashs when everyone rushes to get new software"...it's a pretty clockwork news item.  A company's network NOT crashing would be the real news.

im not surprised it crashed, im surprised almost all of apples servers where affected like that, if it's just the download server, whatever no big deal, thats expected, if its other services tho thats odd.

likely some node went down at the wrong moment and caused the issues. Like, youtube was down for a good while yesturday for some unknown reason...then this... I think we're just assuming more robustness in our networks than is actually there.
