Hello, I have a question. ~2 years ago Linus made a Video regarding Intel Optane on AMD systems. The result was not really good. So the recommendation was to use PrimoCache witth a fast SSD.

So when Linus build new Workstations for his guys i was a bit bewildered when he build a AMD system and used a Intel Optane. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wnptqz_177E&list=WL&index=65&t=979s)

Has somethng changed? Is Optane now working well on AMD systems?

I am asking because it is really time to get a new Pc and i am searching for the right parts. And because i 100% want to use a AMD CPU i am very interested to hear about Optane compability.

regards

Optane basically has never been worth it. Expensive stuff for very little storage which results in it not being able to hold enough data to be a usefull cache. For that money just get a bigger ssd or a cheap ssd and big hdd and make the ssd the cache.

Optane drives are just nvme drives, like any other.

They work fine on amd systems, and are some of the fastest nvme drives in a lot of workloads.

The recomdation of not using optane was based of using them for cache drives, where the extra space makes a bigger difference than the extra speed of optane.

For a desktop/gaming pc, don't bother with optane, it won't make a big difference for most uses, and is way more expensive.

There's no reason for optane because it's so expensive. A cheap NVMe SSD with AMD's StoreMI is more economical for the same result, and sure the one time I got my hands on an optane setup it worked a treat, but the cost is just so bad.

You need an optane supported board, an expensive optane drive, and if you already have a boot SSD, you probably will not notice the difference.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Optane (real optane not the accelerators) is far superior to NAND but the price is way too much unless your making money off of it.  Most performance drives have some amount of RAM and "SLC-like" section so your not noticing how slow the NAND is.

AMD 7950x3D / Gigabyte Aurous Master X670E/ 64GB @ 6000c30 / 3 x 4TB Samsung 990 Pro / 44TB Synology 1522+ / MSI Gaming Trio 4090 / EVGA G6 1000w /Thermaltake View71 / LG C1 48in OLED + MSI 321URX - Moved back to air cooling Phantom Spirit 120 SE.  Server (PLEX) - 155H NUC 64GB  and 60GB Optane drive/ Server (AI) 64GB M4 Max Mac Studio

I guess you're talking about 3D XPoint

In essence all consumer Optane are SSDs of some kind.

Optane Memory is the name given to the cache modules use to boost (mainly) hard disk speed on Intel platforms. That's largely pointless at retail pricing at least. Maybe it is worth it for an OEM to do.

There are Optane SSDs also. These work pretty much like any SSD from a use viewpoint. I have a 900p for example, 280GB at... not cheap. For low QD random reads, it destroys pretty much every flash based SSD outside of some really extreme enterprise drives. In practice, no, I don't feel it. It is a leap in SSD technology, and unfortunately as long as it comes at a big price premium, it probably isn't worth it for most.

Thanks Guys! It will not be a gaming rig i am building but if the difference between Optane and a fast M2 SSD is so small i go with a M2 (probably a 1TB 980 Pro). The 5 WD Red are controlled by a 9260-8i (will probably be upgraded by a 9271-8i because i am able to get one for a really good price). But it all has to wait untill the price for the new 5900X is down to a "normal" level ((Q1 2021?).

But i already started to search for all my older Watercooling parts. Checking the pump AGB, Radiators. . .

When i heard that the new 5000 series CPUs + Crosshair VIII Dark Hero allow OC without loosing the option for Single thread Boost i was so excited. Because it is getting interesting again!
