Your UX design "pet peeves"

What are some UX issues that just really get on your nerves?


Top of my list would probably be restrictions on what can be entered into a text field which are not displayed to the user until they break them.

For example - if your site stipulates that all passwords must contain a number and a symbol - fine, but put a note underneath the "change password" field to this effect. Don't wait for someone to miss out a number and a symbol and then have it throw an error. Similarly, if usernames can't be changed later, tell the user that when they sign up. Don't let them wait until they go to change their username and then suddenly find they can't.

 

I know it sounds small, but it's that kind of little thing that really makes a difference.

By the way, my desktop is a docked laptop. Get over it, No seriously, I have an exterrnal monitor, keyboard, mouse, headset, ethernet and cooling fans all connected. Using it feels no different to a desktop, it works for several hours if the power goes out, and disconnecting just a few cables gives me something I can take on the go. There's enough power for all games I play and it even copes with basic (and some not-so-basic) video editing. Give it a go - you might just love it.

No dark mode = bad user experience. That's all I have to say.

Having the back button on the browser not go back to the previous page and redirect you to the same page where you would have to spam the button to go back a page.

The website my school uses for classes (Sakai) does that, and it's the most annoying thing ever.

Websites that implement parallax effects as you scroll. They never feel nice.
