Adding another pair of RAM

Hello,

If I have 1 pair of 2x4GB DDR4 2666Mhz and I plan to buy a new pair of 2x8GB 3200Mhz, should I add it to the existing pair and have total of 24GB? Or since it goes to the lowest speeds of the pairs, which is 2666Mhz it would make performance聽worse and I should just use the new pair and have 16GB?聽It's a Ryzen 3200g CPU. Also, will it work it dual channel mode? (Or is it called quad if there are 4 sticks?聽馃槃)

thanks

Do you NEED the extra RAM to make it 32GB?

Otherwise, I'd just run the DDR4-3200 to get 1600MHz 1:1 with the Infinity Fabric on the CPU.

No, 4x sticks =/= Quad Channel.

That's now how Dual/Triple/Quad Channel works...

You are running Dual Channel with 4x sticks of RAM...2 sticks in each channel.

EDIT:

See if your Ryzen 3200G can even handle DDR4-3200 first.

The 3200G is Zen+ architecture (like Ryzen 2000-series), and you *might* be limited to DDR4-2933 or DDR4-3000.

Because of the weaker Integrated Memory Controller (IMC) vs non-APU Ryzen 3000-series (Zen 2) and 5000-series (Zen 3).

thank you! Yep, on my motherboard specs it says Picasso CPUs support Up to 2933Mhz

*By 1:1 you mean that the FSB matches the memory speed? I would need to聽tweak a few things in the BIOS for that right, including FSB itself? i.e match the base speed of CPU to the base speed of the ram?聽What is the FSB of the 3200g btw?

The Infinity Fabric (IF) the is communication bus between the Ryzen CPU core chiplets.

From what I can find, the Infinity Fabric is 1:1 with the DRAM until 1600 ~ 1733聽MHz (e.g. DDR4-3200 ~ DDR4-3466), at least on Zen+ .

It is based on the ACTUAL RAM speed, not EFFECTIVE RAM Speed.

DDR4-3200 is 3200 MHz effective, and 1600 actual.

CPU-Z will show the Infinity Fabric as聽NB Frequency聽on the 'Memory' tab.

If the RAM frequency goes too far, the ratio will drop from 1:1 to 1:2, and you'll see a huge latency hit...drop in performance.

EDIT:

As @ShrimpBrime聽corrected, the DRAM +聽Infinity Fabric + NB is 1:1:1.

One indicator you've gone too far is the NB frequency dropping to a 1:2 ratio.
