New server build ( mostly minecraft )

Go to solution Solved by Electronics Wizardy,

For that budget the intel option is about as good as it can get. Id probably try to get a i3 10100 if you can though, esp if you wan to run other things on it aswell.

after running minecraft on my prebuilt -nas for about half a year now, I see that it has reached it's limits.

-What will I be doing on the server? :

the server will mostly used for Minecraft but in the future I'll turn it into a nas and try getting into this homeserver stuff. Maybe Plex or something like that but for now only Minecraft

-What do you need to know:

The Minecraft server program can only use on single core and therefore will benefit from high coreclocks

I prefer higher cost at the beginning to ongoing costs.

-Current plans for hardware:

  • option 1 : CPU   :    Intel Pentium Gold G6400   ~56€
  •       motherboard:    Gigabyte B460 M DS3H      ~75€
  •              memory:    G.Skill Aegis 16gb @ 3200 MHz ( I'll swap it with my main PC's 16gb 2400 MHz ram ) ~ 55€
  •               storage:   Transcend MTE220S SSD 512 GB M.2  ~65€

Pros of option 1: higher coreclocks

Cons of option 1: frequency not adjustable

  • option 2 : CPU : Athlon 3000G ~50€
  •      motherboard:  MSI B450 Pro-VDH Max ~65€
  •              memory:    G.Skill Aegis 16gb @ 3200 MHz ( I'll swap it with my main PC's 16gb 2400 MHz ram ) ~ 55€
  •               storage:   Transcend MTE220S SSD 512 GB M.2  ~65€

Pros of option 2: adjustable clock ( undervolting possible )

As you might see there are no PSU and case listed. This is because I‘ll figure that later out.

Do you have any other suggestions? Please let me know

Go on ebay get a random i7 dell and call it a day. Gonna be about 150$ for a i7 3770 + 8gb of ram and possibly even an ssd full computer no need to do anything else and it just works.

Depending your budget you can often get a retired datacenter servers w/o hardrives for pretty cheap off ebay. You can easily get something with 2 CPU's like 48-96GB (or more) of ram for $200-$500 USD. Typically they're E5645 CPU's or similar so dual six cores hyper threaded. A lot of the times they will also come with HBA cards and hot swap front drive bays so you can get a pretty decent NAS setup going as well. Dual redundant power supplies as well. IPMI typically on the mobo it self.

CPU: Intel i7 - 5820k @ 4.5GHz, Cooler: Corsair H80i, Motherboard: MSI X99S Gaming 7, RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB DDR4 2666MHz CL16,

GPU: ASUS GTX 980 Strix, Case: Corsair 900D, PSU: Corsair AX860i 860W, Keyboard: Logitech G19, Mouse: Corsair M95, Storage: Intel 730 Series 480GB SSD, WD 1.5TB Black

Display: BenQ XL2730Z 2560x1440 144Hz

That’s a good idea when you need many cores but Minecraft needs only one core

I also don’t want a loud old server that pulls a lot of energy

but still thanks for you tip

and lower your ram speed to 2666

I already have 2400Hhz memory in my PC and I‘ll use this for the server and the new 3200MHz will go into my PC

the 10100 is a double than what I planned.

Does it draw more power than the Pentium or Athlon?

if not I may consider buying it

the thing is that getting lower ram speed dosn't affect proformance on intel close to amd and also i belive that now you cant go past 2666 speed ram on a i3 anymore anyways

Its power is aboue the same at idle, a bit higher at load. Have a few of those i3s in my work systems, and they max at like 60-70w, idle at sub 5 w.

Thanks for the information

how much difference in power draw? 10 Watts ? 20 Watts ?

Depends on the load.

IM guessing it will be idle most of the time, so power wil be about the same.
