What to do with my old rig

Hey everoyne, wasnt sure what section this should go in.   (im from the UK btw if that matters)

Dug out my Old gaming rig and not sure what to do with it - my current rig is my m18x r2 which is in my sig, which currently runs pretty much everything on ultra (eg bf4 on mantle 1080p 60fps average easy on ultra with 2xmsaa)

Specs

i5 2500k (currently running at stock)

GTX 580 Twin Frozr

12GB ram (havnt looked at what it is, corsair vengeance i think)

64gb OCZ Vector 4 SSD

2tb WD Green

Cooler Master mid tower (its ok, bit rubbish)

Anyway, im not sure what to do, do i upgrade the GPU (im thinking of a 780ti) will the 2500k be a big bottleneck? do i sell the whole think? upgrade to an ivy bridge i7?

What would the 580 be worth or even the whole tower?

my other idea was i just built a really nice home server (msi z87 1150 mobo, g3220 pentium, 16gb corsair vengeance, fractal design r4)

should i turn the old computer into my server and sell the 580, then buy a haswell i7 and 780ti?

Any ideas would be welcome, im at a loss as to my best option

Build an extremely powerful router, or a game server (if your into that stuff) or make it into a home theater PC for steam os/get a tv card.  Or a home server could be good, need more drives probably though.

Beneath this mask there is more than flesh. Beneath this mask there is an idea, Mr. Creedy, and ideas are bulletproof.

As I get older I get angrier more cynical, meaner. I feel some warning posts coming. I feel a ban coming. I was warned.

Personally I think the 2500k is fine? I maybe just get a new GPU? and maybe an SSD and you'll be right back in the game :)

I already have an Asus AC66U so not sure i could really build anything better than that. dont really need a home theatre pc, i have a 42" tv in my office which my laptop connects to plus i can just carry it to my tv :P, i already have a server as mentioned in the post

Save it and save money, when your laptop kicks the bucket or isn't up to snuff anymore build a monster desktop with what you've saved. You could also give it or sell it cheap to a friend as it is still a capable gaming rig.

Overclock the cpu and chuck in a 780 or 780ti. Games hardly use the cpu so you'll be fine

If i just sold the 580 and bought a 780ti would the i5 2500k crate a big bottleneck?

i have the money to do it, but if it creates a problem i would rather just build a new rig

also not sure if it being pcie 2.0 not 3.0 wil make any difference

I'd try and sell it. If you can sell it whole and In one go then great otherwise you could list parts individually and when they sell replace them with a current generation product.

Install a Linux distro on it and learn Linux! Dual booting is a pain, so why not just have a whole separate machine to play with it?

...or just give it to me so I can have a separate Linux box.  :D

  • 2 weeks later...

I say just sell the graphics card like you said I dont think your CPU will have a bottleneck personally? maybe if your playing star citizen in like 2 years? at ultra with everything maxed. a 780ti and a bigger faster SSD is what I see as the best soloution I dont think as far as I know if pcie3 makes much of a diffrence with graphics cards? btw does your motherboard have sata 6gb? anyway point is the cpu is still fairly grunty for gaming and gpu is the only thing holding you back if your REALLY wanting to just upgrade everything and start from scratch then just sell it all imo

so either keep everything but gpu and buy bigger ssd or total from scatch upgrade

hope that helps :)

If you're using PCI-E 2 and not 3 you should upgrade your entire system. Sell your current parts on EBay and get yourself a new computer.
