NVME and Boot Drives

I know there isn't for gaming, but is there any noticeable difference between booting from a SATA ssd and an nvme (either gen3 or gen4)?

I am currently planning on an upgrade including a complete re-install and am contemplating whether or not to get a system nvme with it. I currently boot off a samsung evo 860 2tb (which still takes about a minute)

I can't really see any difference with my WD NVMe in my desktop and whatever SATA drive I have on my laptop.

 

I don't think it should take a minute to boot even on HDD though.

No, not that different.

NVME feels different when sleeping or waking / dumping large data from memory to the drive.

This is one of those perennial questions... and usually results in answers that centre around "it isn't worth bothering to upgrade a SSD for"; if you're upgrading from a HDD then NVMe is now way more affordable than it used to be, so worth it.

 

The other side of the equation is more along the lines of when/if it's worth switching SSD form factors... and the resounding wisdom seems to be no, unless you do a large amount of mass storage read/write work.

 

That said, with the abundance of m.2 slots being made available on motherboards, it begs the question, "why should I have all these drive cables?" and that does indeed mean less to manage.  m.2 drives largely mean tidier innards for your PC, but if you rarely venture behind your case panels, it may not be worth it to the individual user.

Did you test boot it, before you built in into the case?

i would say it depends on mobo. The POST and Fastboot can be a little different for NVMe and AHCI drives. 

 

Had a friend, that bought the samsung 970 pro 512GB, and from pressing power button, was 2 seconds faster to windows loading logo on normal AHCI SSD, than the 970 pro. Then the windows loading time was almost identical. It's a friend from other tech forum, so i do believe him, don't remember his setup motherboard thou. It was like 4 to 6 seconds, for one and the other SSD, if i remember correctly.
