140 hz refresh rate on 165hz monitor

Hello guys 

I have recently bought a ASUS 165hz monitor with 0.5 ms response time. I don’t get 165 frames tho. So I have changed the refresh rate of the monitor to 144 and also the in game and in app frame rate to 144 is this okay? Will It affect the monitor in anyway? 
Any advice is appreciated

It won't adversely affect your monitor but I don't see an advantage to under-clocking your monitor's refresh rate. You might as well leave it at 165hz and if you don't get that many frames there is no issue with that.
