At what point does a thread I created become too old to revisit/rediscuss as opposed to restaring a fresh version?

Can I realistically call myself a gamer, if I only play ONE, twenty year old game...?

Did you test boot it, before you built in into the case?

WHY NOT...?!

I think its different though if its your own topic and its a follow up or helps with details compared to someone coming in and necroing a thread.

A lot of necroing isn't even just about age.

It's about thread hijacking too.

Most necros I see are loosely related to OP and could very easily be its own post.

A lot of people don't realize you can pull quotes from another thread if you do need to reference it for background info.

This is my first thread here, but hopefully not too n00b.

I have a plan to water cool my machine - at some point soon - but am not that keen on taking power tools to hardware for that sake of it - I know my limitations.  ?

What have I got?

R5-3600 on an MSI X470 Gaming Pro; Pure Rock cooler

16GB 3200 Hyper X Predator

Sapphire Pulse RX Vega 56

250GB Samsung 840 (system drive)/500GB 850 Evo (games install drive)/ 1TB 7200.11 (storage drive)

Win10 64-bit

The 'elephant in the room' is the Antec P280 it all lives in; my plans for a custom loop don't seem to want to play nice w/ this case, so I'm looking for advice as to where to look (even a manufacturer) for a water cooling based replacement.

Thanks in advance for any input provided.

About 3 months, is when I believe the forums starts telling you to create a new thread.
Basically when you see this warning

That there's something a few more Forums could do with having as a feature...

When it's no longer relevant, which will depend on the topic.

Does it make more sense to continue the existing discussion or make a new topic?

As a generic example; If you want help choosing a graphics card it would make more sense to create a new topic than to reply to a topic from 5 years ago where you asked whether you should buy the GTX 970 or GTX 980. That would no longer be relevant. But, on the other hand, if you made a post last week asking whether you should buy an RTX 3070 or wait for the RX 6800 and you still want help choosing between the 3070 and 6800 it would make more sense to reply to that post rather than create a new post asking the same question.

Which post were you thinking of, and what were you planning on adding to it?

CPU: Intel i7 6700k  | Motherboard: Gigabyte Z170x Gaming 5 | RAM: 2x16GB 3000MHz Corsair Vengeance LPX | GPU: Gigabyte Aorus GTX 1080ti | PSU: Corsair RM750x (2018) | Case: BeQuiet SilentBase 800 | Cooler: Arctic Freezer 34 eSports | SSD: Samsung 970 Evo 500GB + Samsung 840 500GB + Crucial MX500 2TB | Monitor: Acer Predator XB271HU + Samsung BX2450

With the recent (GPU) releases - from both sides - it gets me asking myself about component choices I've made and what the wisdom of considering a replacement (not immediately, mind you) at some point.

Yes, I know new stuff gets released all the time, but sometimes I feel that some parts in my rig aren't so 'mainstream popular' as to query why I chose them in the first place... and yes, Vega 56 - I'm looking at you.

2nd EDIT:

It has the orange stripe advisory when I read the thread... but I still have the same card/thought process; I guess 'theraputic revisiting of issues' is not something that Forums are built to work with - never mind my relentless forward planning before I actually buy anything.

Thanks, anyway... when I'm better able to do something that involves finances, I'll create a new topic.

The release of new hardware in the 3 and half months since that thread was posted means that it would have lost some of its relevancy.

However, I would say there's not that much point repeatedly asking if your hardware is outdated every time new hardware is released, as new hardware is always released and just because something new comes out does not mean that your hardware suddenly performs worse. It will perform exactly the same as it did before.

When you're actually considering whether or not you should change, that would be when to make a [new] post asking for advice on upgrading.

CPU: Intel i7 6700k  | Motherboard: Gigabyte Z170x Gaming 5 | RAM: 2x16GB 3000MHz Corsair Vengeance LPX | GPU: Gigabyte Aorus GTX 1080ti | PSU: Corsair RM750x (2018) | Case: BeQuiet SilentBase 800 | Cooler: Arctic Freezer 34 eSports | SSD: Samsung 970 Evo 500GB + Samsung 840 500GB + Crucial MX500 2TB | Monitor: Acer Predator XB271HU + Samsung BX2450

I think it's more about what you add and why than when you add it. If nobody has engaged with that thread for weeks and nobody asked you for updates then, if the situation changes to the point that you need more advice, just make a new thread. It's also advantageous for you because showing up in the "new topics" sidebar attracts a lot more attention than the average necro.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

What is the ettiquite for that, because literally every questions been asked, so you could legit pull up a 3 yr old post and be within Linus' rules.

We have couple megathreads, so posting content similar to those should be posted in those threads, regardless of last post date. The note is for situations where someone makes comment or related question to existing threads. The notice is there to suggest that one should make new threads.

You can and should link to older threads if they are relevant or have good answers. We judge necro case-by-case basis. I for example leave posts made by OP always there, and those which have solution to problem. Rest are removed and thread is locked to prevent further posting.
