1080TI Overclocking

I own a Zotac 1080Ti Amp Extreme and I am forced to underclock my card to play games. When I underclock the card to get a core speed of 1.95 - 1.97 Ghz its stable at mem clock speed of 6.22 Ghz but anything beyond that would crash the benchmarks ( FURMARK or HEAVEN). Can I do anything to make it more efficient?

Drop the memory overclock down to like 400-500Mhz. It's probably crashing because of unstable memory. A faster core clock will help a lot more in gaming than higher mem speeds

Just keeping this here as a usually you try and get the highest core clock possible before messing with memory speeds, as core clocks are most important. have you validated your current overclock against stock clocks?

Yes I have.. anything above 1.975 ghz causes a crash ☹️ Am I undervolting?

so if you reset it to complete defaults, 0 offset, it crashes in benchmarks? if you unlock the voltage and give it the max that it allows do you get anything better?

You have it backwards at least for gaming. Get the highest stable core clock then see what you can get from the memory

My GTX 1080 becomes unstable just from installing Afterburner or EVGA Precision. It boosts above 1949mhz which is the normal boost clock for my card, it boosts up to 1986mhz or so instead and unless you add more voltage and power limit it will crash in games. It'll go to like 2011mhz but that'll only pass Firestrike half of the time.

 

I spent weeks trying to figure out some settings, I didn't get the good memory that'll handle the +500, it has the lower end binned sku gpu. So it basically ended in an overclock that was almost entirely just a fan curve while using more power where you wonder if your meaningless, unnoticeable performance gain that you're getting is being negated just by running Afterburner.

 

Some cards are just potatos, without the ability to actually increase power and voltage through the bios you won't get much out of them. I think there's some vbios'es that you can flash on a 1080ti which will increase the power limit but that's doesn't seem to be an option for 1080's so I can't say.

 

Overclocking my ATI and AMD cards was quite fun and easy enough when you committed to modifying the vbios, Nvidia overclocking feels more like asking the card very nicely to go faster.

Additionally should I just assume that 1.97 Ghz is a pretty good performance measure? Metro Exodus keeps crashing with any kind of overclock anyway so I have to disable it using Nvidia's Debug mode. Everything runs smoothly after that. This factory overclock seems like THE problem.🙂

No, that won't do anything. Well at least unless you have an unstable overclock on your CPU or something.

It still feels like a safe space for kids to me, if I want to double the power through my component, let me.

 

As far as flashing a vbios, unless you have a vbios switch on the card of which you have tested both to make sure they both boot on your computer and you make sure to properly back up your vbios before doing so. If it bricks which is likely, it might just be entirely unstable as well. You'll have to flip the switch to the other working vbios, boot into your computer, flip the switch while it's still on so the bricked vbios is selected then flash the original vbios over the bad one.

 

If you don't have a vbios switch, there are other options but since you're unstable out of the box I wouldn't even bother.

 

Also 6200mhz+ doesn't sound right at all for the memory, my 1080 barely does 5500mhz if I recall.

 

I'd start looking at the RX 6800 and RTX 3080 if you're trying to find more performance.

I was just playing with the OC settings and may have discovered the sweet spot for my card. I am now able to get core clock: 1.99 Ghz and mem clock: 6220 Mhz and it is stable at all times - benchmarks and games. I have cross checked these values from NVIDIA in-game overlay as well. I am running all games at 1440p ULTRA settings with no issues. SOTTR consistently above 65 FPS.

 

Do you think it's still a decent card? Am I being too greedy asking for 2.1 Ghz-like numbers that some others are getting? I don't want to upgrade if it's going to lead to marginal improvements. Also I have heard some rumblings about Zotac 3080s users facing similar kind of issues and Zotac is replacing the cheap material that they're used to using for such expensive products.

Hello,

 

Did you open the card and clean? If you do it make sure the memory is well cooled and the pads are ok.

 

If you have it on the vertical mount you can put a fan on the back of the card to get the hot air out.

benchmarks and high res gaming (4k+) see the biggest benefits from memory overclocking, but core overclocking will net the best gainz overall. otherwise, nvidia wouldnt have spent so much time and money developing their gpu boosting algorithms to push clockspeeds to within a few percent of their limits right out of the box.
