How do vapour chamber / heatpipe coolers work horizontally?

I have been thinking about the fact that heatpipe and vapour chamber coolers have liquid inside them, and how the vapour has to be able to travel up and down the pipe as condensate. But how does this work when the cooler is not installed vertically? (i.e. when the motherboard is upright in a case, and not lain down in a testbed config)

I don't know much about how these work, but my Dark Rock 3 when the motherboard is vertical has heat pipes that are below the cpu socket, so how does the liquid travel back to the block? And how does the liquid in the block stay distributed evenly across the IHS contact area and not all just go to the bottom of the system?

Are these coolers somehow more efficient when mounted with the motherboard flat? How do they work? I watched the old TechQuickie video but that just said about the liquid evaporating and condensing.

Quick answer: There's wick material inside to wick the liquid back to the hot surface.

The heat pipes are sealed so when it heats up it travels to the cooler areas which will be away from the cooler as the other end will be in a heatsink with a fan attached

Have you ever seen a condensate on a window? It creates water by condensating steam from the air. Now add a wick material, paper towel for example and touch condensate with it: condensed water will travel along the wick in any direction that is not wet.

The same happens in heat pipe\vapor chamber. Wick material is wet with moisture, near heat source it evaporates and fills tube\chamber with saturated steam, this steam condenses near cold side and wets the wick, moisture tries to fix dry wick and cycle repeats.
