Should I upgrade or wait?

Raggisuer

Hello,

I have a question, so right now I'm still trooping on my r9 290x been a great card despite its age.
I'm still getting decent fps for the games I'm playing, however I think it's time to upgrade. So originally the plan was to wait till the release of the rtx 3070,

however, I think by the time I will be able to get my hands on one of them it's going to take an extra few months. Which is no big deal but with new games being in a couple of weeks such as AC Valhalla, Cold War etc.

I think my r9 290x isn't simply going to cut it anymore especially combined with a ryzen 1700. Today I saw I could get a 2070 Super for 475 Euros.

I'm playing in 1080p on a 165hz monitor which I'm fairly sure the 2070 Super will just handle amazingly compared to my r9 290x,

and the games I'm playing are: Warzone and World of Warcraft most of the time. It would be nice to get higher fps on warzone tho,

the question is should I wait till somewhere in 2021 who knows for the rtx 3070 or just get the 2070 Super which will also satisfy my needs?

And how will my ryzen 7 1700 perform with those cards?

Thank you for your time.

I'd wait for the AMD lineup to come out and be tested.

I am sure you can find a myriad of Ryzen 1700 + "insert graphics card here" videos on YT to check out.

Really tho, I wouldn't pay for a 2070 Super when the 3070 is supposed to release at that price.  Like you said, it's a good card you have, it can run a little longer.

Hi,

I asked a similar question recently albeit with slightly newer components (R5 2600 and RX570). I was planning on getting a 3080 but that went out the window with the availability and whilst I'm waiting on the 6000 series I had a similar thought as you in that do I just buy an RX5700XT as I only game at 1080p.

General advice was wait to see what the AMD release brings so I'm holding off for now. If available before xmas I'll pick one up but if it's looking unlikely I'll probably just get the RX5700XT and save myself a few hundred quid too.

Difficult time at the moment, but I'd say wait out a couple of weeks and then make an informed purchase early Nov?

Why buy something that is last gen for the price of the next generation that is either coming out or so new, you cannot get your hands on it?? Personally I would wait until AMD's 6000 series announcement on Wednesday, 28th of October 2020. If they have a steep price discount on the RTX 2070 Super, then its a better buy but not for the MSRP of a RTX 3070.

That's a good call actually! I'll wait to see what thew new amd line up will be. Another big factor why I may be considering the rtx series is for rtx voice. Since I do have a fairly loud household.

Mhhhh, indeed guess i'll wait what the amd line up will bring. But as mentioned the price isn't really the issue since i'm aware here in Belgium most of the 3000 series rtx cards right now are just being bought by giant tech retailers to put them in their prebuild pc's, and if you could manage to get your hands on one it will be 120-200 euros above MSRP anyway. For example a rtx 3080 at this time is going for 849 euros and that's the cheapest one.

Sure the RTX 3080 seems reasonable but for example, why pay $500 for a RTX 2070 Super when you can pay $500 for a RTX 3070 that is faster than a RTX 2070 Super, you get what I mean?

Oh yeah sure totally get the point. However where I was going with this meant that a rtx 3070 in Belgium probably will be going for 600-650. Which I guess is still fair for a card that can beat a 2080 ti. It’s just the matter how long it will take for me to get my hands on one or maybe the AMD line up could surprise me.
