Intel's HEDT lineup has bigger packages on Skylake-X (previously mentioned on the Tech News discussion on this) which is 52.5 mm × 45 mm. It's nothing new and they are going with a BIG little design for CPU performance.

when you move said size to mainstream cpus its a problem by me not that i don't like intel i would rather take intel but I'm not losing performance since i like a brand

Its exciting news that is coming out from leakers that Intel may have a chance at coming back (which is necessary for competition) but when we're talking about a year out from now...that's where they may be SOL with upgrades to AMD over the next couple of months.

Size shouldn't really matter as most coolers fit Intel's HEDT format. Threadripper is a different subject as that die is HUGE.

as much as i love intel they gotta keep sockets for longer like put blank pins on the cpu if you have to but why every 2 generations it yeets upgradeability out the window

I believe from what I have read online that Intel has finally sorted out 10nm process and starting production or have already begun production (I know select laptop CPUs are beginning to come out with 10nm SuperFin) and is exciting.

Yeah there have been a slew of different socket types and does it really matter to the consumer? No, I just know that there are performance increases over each type and more features that you don't get on previous socket types.

Do you not want more features with a new processor? AMD already achieved 5 years of support using the AM4 platform and a small vocal group spoke up about Zen 3 not being supported on older motherboard chipsets and forced AMD's hand to support them.

thats a good argument but cpus come out every year so 3 years of support will be a very nice addition it can't happen with LGA1200 as the fact that dd5 is coming but maybe with LGA1700?
