I’m sure there is a topic all about this somewhere, but I didn’t know how to word it in search to find it correctly, or the solutions didn’t work for me.

Here we go,

I work in film and television in LA, Local 80 Grip, and I own a Galaxy Note 10+ in a world dominated by iPhone. Usually this hasn’t been a problem, as far as I know, but recently I was working with a new Key and when we exchanged numbers, I couldn’t receive texts from him, but he could get them from me.

Now I know about the SMS toggle in iOS and I had him turn his on. Did not solve the issue. I had him delete our conversation, didn’t solve the issue. I even went and made sure my number was de-registered from iMessage, I haven’t owned an iPhone for years, and still didn’t work.

when he writes a message to me, the empty text bar says iMessage and my chat bubbles are blue on his phone instead of green.

my worry is that I have lost work because people May have been trying to get ahold of me and I just never respond, or people I used to talk to have been getting my texts, but I haven’t been receiving anything back.

Yesterday I went and got an iPhone 11 and it’s like going from a top of the line Tesla, to a Ford Pinto. I feel dirty.  But everything I search for only proffer the same two things: turn on send SMS on iPhone, and make sure your number is removed from iMessage.

help me LTT Forums, you’re my only hope. What am I missing?

Yeah he is using the iMessage app I’m pretty sure (not 100%) there is a normal SMS app and an iMessage

Reminder⚠️

I'm just speaking from experience so what I say may not work 100%

The messages app on iOS is supposed to differentiate from iMessage and sms, there is no separate included messaging app from apple

Please quote, not sure on this either but when adding a contact you can choose iPhone, home, phone and some more

Go into settings/message and the click send as sms when iMessage not available. No need for anything else.

If you’ve used an iPhone before, your number may still be registered with iMessage. If you Google it you’ll see the page to manually unlink the number.

  • 2 weeks later...

I solved the issue!

Here was the problem:

The people I was having issues receiving texts from received my contact information via a contact card from my brother's iPhone. That contact card was one I shared with him years ago when I had an iPhone, so my number was listed as an iMessage under his contacts.

I had people delete my contact info from their phone's completely, then re-add me and bingo! Problem solved. I then had my brother do the same thing then add me back in manually and no more issue. (He kept trying to tell me it was an android issue for months now and that I just needed to get an iPhone because they're better. So happy to shove that in his face lol.)

Yeah, that wasn't working. The problem ended up being the contact card people were receiving from my brother.

Yeah, I had done that several times just to be sure. I ended up finding the issue was the contact card my brother was sending people from his iPhone.

Oh yeah that bug... He doesn't even need to send it either, it just propagates on its own due to how Apple handles contact info on their end. I had something similar happen once where a coworker had a corrupted contact listing of me in their phone.

He looped me into a group text and then everyone in the group got the same corrupted data... Then all of a sudden my phone couldn't recognize my own number because it seemingly synced with Apple's backend from the group thread. After that, nobody (even people not involved in the group text) with iMessage could send me a message. Eventually this dude deleted my contact entry and so did I and poof... it all worked again.
