Need help identifying pc parts (got a pc for free)

Sakky

Hello, I have always been wanting a pc for the longest and recently while working with my dads very wealthy client he showed me his sons old pc and said I could have it. Now I’m not the biggest tech but I can tell a nice pc when a see one. This one was build around 2012-2015 so it’s a little dated and was wondering if I could get some insight on the case model, mobo, and the cooling in it. I boought new cooling liquid because the liquid in it is definitely old just don’t know what to look up to try and get tips on the actual setup I have. What I know is a core i7 older gen, gtx 960 gpu and a 1050 80+ psu and that’s pretty much all I know. Just purchased a 1660 ti, msi b450mobo with 3k 16gb ram and a ryzen 5 3600. Will take more pics if needed I appreciate any help.

I would say that looks like some sort of ASUS P9X79 board (https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P9X79/). Possibly 8GB of memory since 8GB sticks weren't that common back in those days, and probably Intel Core i7-3960X because it's water-cooled. That's my guess.

Looks like it was originally SLI or Crossfire but someone took one of the cards out based on the loose PCI-e power just sitting at the bottom.

Yes thank you! That’s 100% the board. Any input on the water-cooled setup and case model?

The case looks like a Cooler Master HAF X. Not sure about the water-cooler as it's a custom loop and I'm not familiar with those components. Tubbing looks like it's yellowed really badly though.

But it sure looks like someone spent a pretty penny on this thing. It's got Bluray and everything.

Boot it up and download GPUZ and CPUID.

Is the GPU a 6/8 pin?

Gpu has 8 and there’s a random pcie 6 pin cable floating around under the gpu. No clue what that could be for?? Another gpu? This is the specs I got to pull up.

Yes sir! That’s it. And yes the tubing is pretty fucked it’s been sitting for years and the liquid in it is a green color already. This family definitely had a few k to throw at a pc for there son, they got funny money daily driving Ferrari’s and gt3rs Porsche’s like they’re Honda civics. I’m sure in like 2013 or so it was a pretty boss setup.

The green coloured liquid may have been intentional. Especially back in those days when people really liked to colour match their water-cooling loop with Red, Green, or Blue coolant to represent AMD, Nvidia or Intel respectively. Looks like its got a 16GB kit of Corsair Vengeance LP memory too so definitely a baller system for the time period. Though the GTX 960 seems a bit odd. Doesn't seem like the type of GPU one would choose given the rest of the system. For something of this caliber I would've expected a 980 or at least two 960s in SLI.

One other odd tidbit is how the 8PIN CPU power isn't ran behind the motherboard tray. I'm pretty sure this case has an opening at the top for that cable to come out above the motherboard. And that cable should be long enough given how much slack there is. Not something I would expect from CyberPower.

Funny thing about the ram I think the guy before took 2 sticks out because the sticks in the mb say like 4gb(x4) 16gb

Oh you're right. It's the Corsair cml16gx3m4a1600c10 kit, I accidentally searched for Corsair cml16gx3m2a1600c10.

Yea it looks like he took 8GB of memory out and one of the GPUs because again, a PCIe power is just dangling there.

You can snag a 6 core CPU for that off eBay for likely a decent price and toss that in with like a GTX 1060 and have a pretty decent box without changing anything else. If you're going to swap for a Ryzen system then you'll also need a different water block, but that's pretty trivial.

Would it have had to be the same gpu that he had in it? Because the extra PCIe is 6 pin and the gpu in it is a 8 pin

If the person was running SLI yea. It was possible to run different cards but I don't think it was something a system integrator would even bother offering. Like you would see some people run both an Nvidia and AMD/ATI card, that was a weird time.

The fact that it has FireWire makes it pretty old.

Edit: it is. Tho PC seems like it usable today.
