New 2.1 Setup

WorldDominator

This is what my setup currently looks like:

post-33018-0-26267600-1394299757_thumb.j

My old speakers are kinda of getting fuzzy and crackly at times. I wanted to consider all options you guys have for me and my setup. My budget is $50-100. I included the picture because I don't think I can have larger types of speakers on my desk. What do you guys think?

Bose Companion 2 Series. They are the best small speakers for 100$ you can find.

I don't know about that...Boses are typically not that good for the price.

@Analog @NannerBeans What do you guys think about other options? Disregarding my space dilemma at the moment.

But have you compared with the Gigaworks series from Creative?

What would be your budget? There's plenty of good bookshelf speakers, but good subwoofers are expensive.

You don't need a sub for these speakers. These - Philips SPA8210 are also really really good. I have a pair of these hooked up to my TV.

Yes, I know how the Gigaworks T40s sound and these are better. I bought them to try them out a couple of months ago. I really liked them tough at that time I couldn't spend that kind of cash on speakers and I had to return them to the store. Then I got the Philips SPA8210, which have comparable audio quality, though not as good, but are 30$ cheaper.

PS: The Bose speakers have cleaner audio in the mids and highs without sounding too open if you know what I mean. The Phillips ones are more bass-heavy though have a bit of high pitched noise when they are maxed out. It is especially visible in the highs, at least mine have this problem.

I don't think you have enough room for bookshelf speakers so if it was me, I would probably get the Z313 from logitech for $30 (which I actually did and they are half broken now xD) and save up until you can get nice speakers and more room. I just bought CEntrance 2504 speakers on Massdrop and I have high hopes for those since it cost me $185. Looking to add a sub later but that would be at least $100 more which I don't have right now.

This is what I have right now. I want to feel like I'm getting an improvement though if I do spend more money on speakers.

I may be able to move some stuff around. To the left I have a printer that I dont use anymore so I think I could maybe fit one speaker there and ill be able to have another to the right of my main monitor if i move some stuff around. That's why I'm considering bookshelf speakers. I mainly use it for watching tv and gaming but I neeeeeed a sub.

A decent sub will run you $100 at least so for $100 a 2.0 system would be better.

I've heard these bookshelfs are pretty good but you will need an amp with it.

Hmm I'm consider buying the whole setup right now. Can you give me an idea of the subs that are good? Also is there anything else I'd need to buy with a bookshelf setup? @ShearMe You seemed like you might have something to add.

This is the one I personally want.

http://www.amazon.com/Yamaha-YST-SW012-8-Inch-Front-Firing-Subwoofer/dp/B000TQ4D8K/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1394311814&sr=8-2&keywords=yamaha+subwoofer

I've also heard SVS subs are amazing but they also cost quite a bit.

I'm not too knowledgeable on different bookshelf speakers but I did a lot of research on amps for speakers and the $20 Lepai 2020+ is just unbeatable for the price. You would have to spend a lot more to get something that is noticeably better.

Hmm thanks, I'll keep looking around at subs and speakers and see what I like best. Thanks :D

I actually found this.

http://www.amazon.com/Yamaha-NS-SP1800BL-5-1-Channel-Theater-Speaker/dp/B001AVRD62/ref=sr_1_13?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1394312880&sr=1-13&keywords=yamaha+subwoofer

It looks like the same subwoofer as the one I linked before but not sure. For $20 you get 5 smaller speakers. It might be worth looking into.

I actually think that I will go with the amp + 2 bookshelf speakers. I can upgrade to a sub later when I feel like I need it enough lol. Will that amp support a sub down the road?

Not really; your "need" for a sub kinda puts a damper on things with your budget. Every 2.1 unit under $100 is pretty much the same so far as I know.

Is the sub you're using now fine?

Will the bookshelf speakers still have some bass to them? I can live without it for now and buy one down the road. I'm not majorly concerned. My girlfriend is getting my speaker system when I buy myself a new set so I won't be able to use the sub of my current set, although I doubt I would be able to anyway.

It's different for every set. Really can't say for sure.
