I can only use half of my 8gb RAM

Loeffner

Hello everyone,

I need your help.
I have 8gigs of Ram installed (4x2gb) but I can only use 4 gb. 4gb are reserved for hardware according to the taskmanager.
My BIOS recognizes all 4 dimms but i says, only two of them are activated. But I can't find an option to activate them.
The strange is, that it already worked. But then I got a SSD and reinstalled Windows (8.1 x64).

I hope you guys have some Ideas.

Greetings

I'm pretty sure you installed a 32 bit version of windows.

Check under Start >> Right click 'Computer' and go to 'Properties'

I think I already wrote that it is x64?

And I'm sorry that the pictures are in german, but I think you should be able to understand it.

go into bios and enable 'memory mapping' I had this same problem under Win7 64bit and that cured it. Some people claimed I would have to reinstall windows for the bios setting to be picked up but it worked without a reinstall.

Are all of the DIMMS the same brand? And do you have the matching pairs installed into the proper channels for dual channel mode. (RAM slots are usually colour coded now)

I have encountered this problem when I have installed kits that don't match into the same channel.

@smokincola  I already found this solution on various forums, but I can't find "memory mapping" in my BIOS.

@Mkfish It's 4 times the same brand and size (4x2)

Oh, well never mind sorry D:

That's just a typical characteristic of people who accidentally install a 32 bit OS because they only support up to 4gb of RAM, but looks like that's not your problem.

Have you tried swapping the DIMMs around, taking out the ones that aren't working etc?

Great ! Now get back to work and find me a solution ;)

Unfortunately I really have no clue what your problem could be :(

I'm sure someone else will be able to help you though!

You wouldn't be the first. I already posted in another forum. They have no idea too.

Yes I did swap them.

Do you think my mb is broken?

Edit: This is what it looks like when i only put two dimms in the slots...

Hmmm, I would run a memory test just to be sure with memtest x86 or windows memory diagnostic tool for about 10 passes.

Boot with 1 stick in at a time. If 1 of them makes you bsod or no post then that stick is broken and you should replace it asap.

I can't put just one in. There have to be two (dual channel). Otherwise it won't boot.

Today i tried swapping them around all 24 options nut it didn't help.
