I'd start with this is an outline and up the GPU...

If you're not going with the 10600K, then the 3600 is the next best CPU for gaming IMO.

Finding out what refresh rate the monitor has was kind of a PITA.  wasn’t listed most places it’s sold.  Best-buy is claiming 60hz.  So you need to run older triple a style games at a 60hz/1080p cap.  Not a lot of video card is needed.  A 570 would do it. There could be close to $100 found that way.

The next question is will there be an overclock?

A 10400k is 4/8 so while it would have better IPC than the 6500 and 4 more threads and would work, it’s advantage is mostly overclock ability. If he’s not going to overclock that goes away.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

No AMD at all.  Ok.  Had a boss who was a salesman say to me once “tell them once, tell them twice, take their money” the new Nvidia tax has been about $100 across the board for a couple years now. Gets kinda big at the lower end.  A 1650 would still do what is needed I think.  Or even a 970. Theyre under $100 used. Some 970s say they have 4gb but only actually have 3.5.  This causes problems with some software so care needs to be taken not to get an early one.

overclock is still a thing though. Will he or won’t he?

Why it could matter:

Spoiler

The issue is what will happen to games after the consoles come out.  Games are written for consoles first, and the new consoles are 8/16.  Ive heard between 2.5 & 3.8ghz but 8/16 is baked in.  They can’t change that bit.  They can change how many threads are taken by the OS though. On the PS4/xbox1 it was an 8/8 machine cut down by OS lockout to 6/6 so two threads. Could be anything from 6/12 to 8/17. We’ll find out when they release.  6/12 with no OC may be hittable in your budget.

this man will not be overclocking. he just likes playing games. he doesnt even know what a gpu is and has no interest in learning stubborn old guy he is lol. he doesnt want used

so im thinking 10400, stock cooler, gtx1660, gskill memory 16 gb 3200mhz, corsair 500 watt psu, any case suggestions something with air flow. preferably 140mm as i have extra 140mm fans that are brand new i took out and replaced.

Having trouble finding pricing for the 10400K.  It may not be out yet.  I’m finding the 10400f. At about ~$160. It’s 4.6ghz.

As an unsold chip it chip might not be the fastest clock then unless it’s got the highest base clock. 10400 is considered a not very good chip.  I don’t know why. There seem to be numerous statement to it though.  Might just be that the 3300x is faster for less money

theres no such thing as a 10400k 10400 is a non overclocking chip for 249.99 canadian brand new. they are not making overclocking 10400k chips

10400f is out of budget then?  Seems 10400 does 3.6ghz

Well this is interesting.  Canadian pcpartpicker is showing different core counts and speeds than American pcpartpicker picker.  Canadian pcpartpicker lists 10400 as 6/6 at 2.9/4.3 whereas arc intel has different numbers
