[How to] Lock a Folder with Folder Protector

Hey guys!  So lately, I've been looking for a free software to keep my files hidden (Porn, pictures, etc :D). So, I found this free software, which is amazing! I could hide all my files just less than a couple of minutes!I'm not the only one who watches porn, am I? :D

The software is totally legit and is good.

Here's the link with some of pictures taken by me as a proof.

Images : After I downloaded it, I ran it.

When you run Folder Protector for the first time, the program will ask you for a password that you want to use. Enter a password that you can remember as this will be the password to your protected folder.

After entering the password, the program will open a folder named SecuredFILES. This is your protected folder. You can add all your private files in this folder. This folder is located at the Desktop. After adding all your files, you may close this folder.

Then, you can use the menu in the program to lock your folder. To lock the folder, type lock as your action. After successfully locking the folder, FolderProtector will display that the folder is locked.

Unlocking the protected folder is easy. Just type unlock as your action. Then the program will ask you to enter your password. Upon successfully entering the password, the program will display the contents of your protected folder.

Changing the Password: Just type change as your action. The program will ask you for your current password. Upon successful entry of the current password, the program will ask for your new password and change it instantly.

This works like a charm! I've hidden 4 of my files!

This is real good , for the ones like me who keep things a secret. I know that many if people know it, but I thought it'd be good to post one here!

And yes, the guide, it's copied, pasted and edited, cause I'm in a hurry.

When you lock the folder, the "securedfiles" folder disappears from the desktop, when you unlock, you get it back on desktop (to put the secret files)

@ANUPLUCIFERGAMER, @Scottonpc

Security by Obscurity is the name of the game here. I'll give the original programmer who figured this out on the net credit for allowing us such a way to obscure a folder from the eyes of the average user, but by no means is this secure in any way. Search google for control panel.{21ec2020-3aea-1069-a2dd-08002b30309d} and you'll get plenty of hits.

I would not use this software to protect anything valuable or that which you would want to hide from a true tech geek. Here's the programs runtime:

  1. FolderProtector v2.5-XP.exe extracts a tmp.bat batch file and EditV32.exe executable to the %temp%\XXXX.tmp folder. (XXXX=numbers)
  2. The batch file launches and interacts with the filesystem, registry, and of course, EditV32.exe in order to work.
  3. Asks what password you'd like to use to protect your folder, and stores it in the HKCU\Software\TweakAndTrick\FolderLock registry key.
  4. Creates a "SecuredFiles" folder on the desktop, which isn't really a folder nor is it secure. More on that later.
  5. Add your files you want to protect to the folder, and run the LOCK command from the program.
  6. It moves "SecuredFiles" to %AppData%\Microsoft, and renames it into a virtual folder using the control panel's GUID.
  7. The batch file interacts with EditV32.exe to change variables on the folder, attempting to hide it and make it a system file.
  8. TaDa! Your folder is protected. Except for the part above. Where I just described what it does. And told you how to find the source.

If you really want to protect sensitive information, TrueCrypt it, or better yet, NEVER STORE IT ANYWHERE (physically or digitally) BUT YOUR BRAIN! @lukeptba and @MatheusSanzo both have the right idea here, although obviously not as convenient.
