Maybe it’s just me, but I’ve noticed a rather stark lack of USB ports on motherboards. It is possible that I’ve been spoiled with my 10 rear USB ports, but even finding a board with 8 onboard is becoming increasingly difficult. /rant

Yes; as an X99 system user, you have been spoilt... there are 'boards with north of 10 USB ports on them, but they need looking for - they're not usually wallet friendly, either.

Can I realistically call myself a gamer, if I only play ONE, twenty year old game...?

Did you test boot it, before you built in into the case?

WHY NOT...?!

I try to reserve my front panel I/O for more portable stuff (my iLok and Waves USB key account for 2 front ports at a time, for example). And I am unfortunately one of those people that needs at least 8 in the back.

The Asrock X570 Phantom I use has 8 USB 3.0 ports on the back and I use exactly 0 of them. :D

I know I shouldn’t be surprised by this, but it honestly blows my mind to think that some people have so little use for USB.

They just don’t make ‘em like they used to, sigh. I remember a period where all 14 ports I had available were populated and I was looking at add-in cards for more. Honestly extra USB ports is something a user like myself is willing to pay a premium to get.

That's not the reason.

I use a Thunderbolt 3 dock and so I don't need the USB ports on my motherboard.

I've been a pitifully slow adopter of new things. My next audio interface will run over Thunderbolt, but I otherwise have yet to actually use the technology. Hell, I only recently upgraded from a USB 2.0 flash drive to USB 3.1 since my motherboard supports it. Chock it up to frugality, I suppose. "Why replace what's not broken?" That said, a thunderbolt dock would make sense for most users.

well you can always add usb ports some come like a card or snap in to your rail- and some are splitters- or you go with a bigger board- like i did- and then add more not that i needed too but what the hell-might well add them since i have them from old computer parts- but yeas seems manufacturers specially on store bought computers don't add alot of usb or even pci e ports- but think manufactures thinking on avg people don't need all those ports and things- and it adds cost- so make money seling after market parts- what bothers me is when they sell three prong fans and only have 4 prong pins and they do not add a adapter- i mean adding 8.00 to cost really going be a bad thing- cost that just to drive out and buy adapter plus cost of adapter- manufactures don't think it works sell it- people complain about chinese stuff well my book america is compeating in who can sell the cheapest crap- hahaha it's a issue-

When it comes to pre-built PCs, it's fairly common knowledge that most retailers will sell what is going to offer them the largest profit margin. Manufacturers of theses PCs are typically the same way. Any place where they can save a penny, they will. And ultimately it's the consumer that gets the short end of the stick.

and it not just on pre builts either but ike office depot then have team goes in shown products select them and get x amount for having that product on the floor- least they used too- and not just a profit thing - but what price range the avg person going to spend on the product in general- like with comparison to what others have to offer- and how long will the product be in circulation before it needs be replaced and tariffs and things naturally add to cost- thanks trump- i went with the hero v111 way over kill- but one has jap parts - woow- and because thick strong board it last a long time with care- and got everything i want or would want- other wise might well buy a computer every year- because every year something new comes along- drives- options speed etc- i mean it nuts- always been that way- but as parts cost more chip development cost more etc gotta cheat some place to keep price affordable-
