So till zen 3 processers come out i plan on buying a amd 3100 and using it as a stepping stone till i have my final build (planning a killer system thats quite expensive) since my current one is sorta showing its 6 or so year age.

Would a ryzen 3100 be perfectly fine (with 32gb 3000 C15 Ram) for a minecraft or other gaming server as one function and a media server as the other?

Note about the ram. I bought it quite a while ago as it was planned for a ryzen 3700 build that got postponed then replaced when rumors of zen 3 made the idea of making a dream machine to handle me for the next 5 plus years or so. I know its most likly over kill. im getting an asrock Mobo so i do plan on upgrading it to ECC eventually but thats way down the line.

Media server as in storage server? Also why not just wait a bit longer? If you've been going thus far on your current build why bother switching to a new one. The old one can be repurposed for doing the media server and mc server if you so wish. It's more than capable of hosting files and minecraft hosting with a i5 4570.

I plan on doing killer water cooling in the new one and my current pc is such garbage now a days. the 3100 is somthing like a 30 percent boost. I wont be buying the cpu, mobo  and WC gear till december or so.

If you aren't buying the 3100 till december then there isn't any problem as zen 3 is out by then.

If you're waiting for a cheap 4th gen, probably 6 months later.

On launch they will only display some key mainstream model like 12, 8 or 6 cores.

some board only allow Ryzen PRO using ECC.

the market is full of Ryzen 1700 PRO for the price of a regular 1600.

You can get that as an alternative.

Ryzen 5700g @ 4.4ghz all cores | Asrock B550M Steel Legend | 3060 | 2x 16gb Micron E 2666 @ 4200mhz cl16 | 500gb WD SN750 | 12 TB HDD | Deepcool Gammax 400 w/ 2 delta 4000rpm push pull | Antec Neo Eco Zen 500w

how you came up with those models? they aren't announced yet, so anything you read on the net is basically speculations.

yeah in the meantime you can use that 1700 pro if you can get one, the same price as 3100 but with 16 bloody threads.

I was more interested in single thread performance for when I convert it later. Also  I know its speculation but that's the general gist of my plans regardless of what they are called. I'll take a look at prices I guess and make a decision. For such a small server I was looking at single core performance over the amount of cores and the 3100 seemed to be the best of both worlds.

no harm using aliexpress, you can see the amount of sold there, if it was bogus, nobody would leave 4+ stars.

CPU is very much a safe buy. Haven't heard any fake ryzen on the market, yet.

Oh what's what that is. Never occurred to me. Alright well I guess I'll make a decision at some point.

Servers and even desktops technically are designed to run multiple services or "applications". Not being able to do so would be like needing a dedicated computer for notepad, needing a dedicated computer for a PDF reader, needing a dedicated computer for GTA, etc.

A server or rather a desktop setup to run like a server can very much host a Minecraft server & serve as a SMB/SSH file server and/or PLEX simultaneously. You just need to know how to set it up.

If you're going to go ASRock you might like to look into ASRock Rack. These workstation/server type boards come with a great little feature known as IPMI. You won't realize how much you wish every motherboard came with it until you try it.

I'm aware I just dont wanna over encumber it (I do stupid shit for fun)

For the mobo I would prob invest in that if I didn't spent all my time at home even outside of the pandemic.

A Minecraft server is a very single threaded (I believe Java/Javascript) application. Looking up the Ryzen 3 3100 it's a 4C/8T. I'm not a PLEX guru. I just stream videos off a SMB share to VLC player but unless you're streaming video at very high resolutions, bitrates, or are attempting to run many simultaneous streams the CPU should be able to handle it all and more.

Heck host your own VPN on the server while you're at it.

What is your motherboard budget? If you can't, you can't, and that's fine. IPMI is just a remote management tool. Let's say the server locks up and you're not home. It can let you hit the reset button without physically hitting the reset button. Monitor temps. Voltage Rails. Etc. Stuff like that.

im not looking at spending much more then is absolutly nessesary on it if i end up going down this path. I know what ipmi is and its super cool but if my server locks up in the one time i leave my home in a month then it can wait. its most likly only going to be used by me
