Minimum static pressure needed for an intake with a Corsair mesh filter?

I'm trying to find the optimal fan configuration for my Corsair C70 and I need to know the minimum static pressure necessary for an intake with a corsair mesh filter.

The pressure ratings for the fans I'm looking at are as follows:

 

1.18 mmH20

 

1.21 mmH20

 

1.48 mmH20


2.29 mmH20

Which of these should I go for?

That would be a very exact calculation, unlikely someone knows this data off the top of their heads, google search results will likely yield better results.

 

This said I'm not sure why you need to have it so exact. If these case fans are not on a rad just get a fan that is optimized for static pressure and airflow. That filter is not particularly dense so I doubt one option will vary much from another. If you have these fans on a rad get the most static optimized fans and call it a day.

I guess it is a pretty precises question. To be honest I wasn't sure if I'd get an answer but just thought it might be worth asking on the off-chance.

Basically I'm just trying to narrow it down as much as possible and just reached the point where I need more input.

I'm trying for the quietest system possible without sacrificing my highest potential overclock so I'm trying to be as exacting as possible.

I've got two 120mm intakes in the front and two 140mm intakes in the floor of the case to fill. The choices I'm looking at are these:
 

 

120mm:

 

3.98 cfm per dB(A) at 1.48 mmH20


3.53 cfm per dB(A) at 2.29 mmH20


 

140mm: 
 

4.72 cfm per dB(A) at 1.18 mmH20

 

4.56 cfm per dB(A) at 1.21 mmH20

 

 

I guess the 140mm fans' static pressure is close enough for the 4.72 cfm/dB(A) to be the way to go, but the 120mm fans I'm not so sure about?



I've also got a 120mm fan that pushes 4.27 cfm per dB(A) but I've ruled that out (possibly erroneously?) as an intake with a filter because its static pressure at full speed is only 0.39 mmH20. I'm using it as an extractor.

Personally I think you are overthinking this, and I am very anal about temps, fan noise, and airflow.

 

The static or airflow optimization is going to be basically impossible to 100% figure out. If you want a quiet system set custom fan curves and get quiet 4-pin PWM fans. 

 

Fan type and placement would matter more here IMO. For that case you want static optimized fans as intake, because even though the front panel allows for good airflow you are fighting the hard drive cages, and for exhaust fans I would go for fans that are a balance or slightly more airflow optimized. 

 

So my suggestion would change depending on how or where they are being used and location in the case.

I don't really need it figured out 100%, at this point it's more or less just a matter of which of the two 120mm fans I choose for the front intakes.

I've removed the hard drive cages so they're not an issue but I'm not sure if they would be anyway? Have you seen this video where Slick fills a computer case with stuff to test airflow?

But yeah, no hard drive cages; I'm really just concerned about the dust filter mesh and whether it makes enough difference that I should choose one of the 120mm fans over the other.

The 140mm fans are in the floor of the case, also without obstruction other than the mesh filter they're pulling the air through.

I always choose static optimized fans. Unless you have zero obstruction, they will almost always perform better.

 

*Edit* and by zero obstruction, I mean nothing more than a old school wire fan grille and a very spacious, open case.

I would never think that in a big case and bad cable management would matter regardless. Hard drive bays will block airflow. One of my systems moved from a large case with front HDD bays to a smaller case without HDD bays and CPU+GPU temps dropped by 10 degrees with less fans in the system.

 

Noctua A12/F12s or Corsair ML120's would be perfect, they have very quiet bearings, provide a good balance between airflow and static pressure, and can operate at low RPM.

I would never think that in a big case and bad cable management would matter regardless. Hard drive bays will block airflow. One of my systems moved from a large case with front HDD bays to a smaller case without HDD bays and CPU+GPU temps dropped by 10 degrees with less fans in the system.

 

Noctua A12/F12s or Corsair ML120's would be perfect, they have very quiet bearings, provide a good balance between airflow and static pressure, and can operate at low RPM.  

I guess it's a matter of "your mileage may vary"...?

NF-A12, moves 2.66 cfm per dB(A) at 2.34 mm H20

 

NF-F12  moves  2.45 cfm per dB(A) at 2.61 mm H₂O  

 

ML-120 Pro moves 2.03 cfm per dB(A) at 4.2 mmH20

 


I've tried to track down the specs for the generic corsair fans that came with my case and found this...

1.92 cfm per dB(A) at 0.91 mm/H20  (but I'm a little reluctant to trust that as it seems pretty weak)

 

 

Edit: Using Fractal Design's basic proprietary fan as a substitute (since they have similar mesh in their cases) and assuming they know what they're doing, it should shed some light on what kind of static pressure might be necessary:

Their 120mm silent fan pushes 2.27 cfm per dB(A) at 0.78 mmH20

Their standard 120mm case fan pushes 2.70 cfm per dB(A) at 0.88 mm H20

...both of which make the above specs for the Corsair stock fans look more reliable. 



So, compared to the 120mm fans I've been looking at it looks like either should be fine so I'm inclined to go with the fan that moves the most air: 
 

 

3.98 cfm per dB(A) at 1.48 mmH20


3.53 cfm per dB(A) at 2.29 mmH20

 


...so, unless anyone chimes in to the contrary, I'm going with the fans with the higher airflow.

The smaller the fan and the faster the RPM, the higher the static pressure. Larger fans like 140mm tend to be better in air flow, but might not have as much static pressure as a 120mm fan. The static pressure rating is for when the fan is at it's max RPM, at those static pressure ratings, it will be loud. I have HD-120s and LL-120s in my systems and I usually run them at 900 RPM. It is better on sound levels to have a many fans at lower RPM than having a couple at a very fast RPM. I also do like to use 140mm on exhaust, due to their higher air flow.
