Hey everybody, I'm wanting to put together a new desk. My original plan was to do an L-shaped desk, one portion just as a regular desk, and the other as a sit-stand desk. I'm wanting to just get a base and do an IKEA tabletop, 59 inches long. Any specific recommendations for a base? I've seen a lot of good things about Jarvis, but some equally not great things. I've also looked into MOnoprice and Autonomous as well. Not too sure what I should be looking for with each option.

I use Autonomous.

They sell the powered legs separately and they have corner kits.

They are not cheap but I would not buy another brand.

  • 2 months later...

I got my standing desk at IKEA. I'm very happy with it. It even has bluetooth. Yeah, f*cking bluetooth on a desk. Super pointless, but fun if you want to troll friends when they sit at your desk. :D

The one that I got is called the "IDÅSEN". (very catchy)

You can get the base seperately and use basically any tabletop on it. (You might have to drill your own holes into the desk, not all ikea tops fit out of the box)

The length of the base can be adjusted and it comes with dual motors, which I guess is good?

IDÅSEN Schreibtisch sitz/steh, schwarz/dunkelgrau, 120x70 cm

Edit: Saw way too late that this topic is quite old. lol

I bought a desk from lifespan (it was part of a standing desk setup). It's 72" wide. What can I say about it...MDF is not a suitable material for a desk. This desk surface is MDF with a wrap around it. The wrap is quality, looks nice, feels nice, and has lasted for 2+ years, but the desk sags in spite of the reinforcing bars under it. It doesn't wobble, and the electric raise/lower is nice, but for the money, you could easily get a desk that has multiple pre-set heights (IE: push 1 for height 1, push 2 for height 2, you can, of course, customize those heights).

As for the desk surface? I'd recommend finding a local woodworker with a slabbing saw or reaching out to someone like April Wilkerson (that class of person rather than her specifically) and getting them to make you a desk surface. Alec Steele has a few videos where he shows making (non-adjustable) desks for his employees and, well, Alec's are overbuilt to a ridiculous degree, but that's his style. For a 72" desk, 1.5" of any hardwood should easily be strong enough to not sag.

If I were building my desk over, I'd actually make a sandwich desk: Powered adjustable height leg kit that bolted directly to some sort of steel or aluminum plate (maybe 1/2" thick and 6 inches wide in the middle, with two 1" thick 2" wide bands at the front and back; basically a rectangle with cutouts in the center), and on top of that frame I would put my wood surface. Why? Because the metal frame would give the desk all the rigidity it would ever need, and if I wanted to use MDF as a top surface, I totally could. But in reality, I'd still use a (thinner, maybe 1/2" to 1") hardwood, partly for looks, partly for durability. the large cutouts in the metal frame would allow the desk to simply friction-fit into the frame, with shims filling out any gaps.

Can't you do a diy one? It's pretty an Easy thing to do

Both ikea and monoprice give out cheap crap, ikea is famous by sending out void wood tablet, filled with crap like cardboard

Which is not that bad, but it is still cheap af, and for the Money that you're giving to them it's not worth it
