Quick Question

When I run an internet speed test I get between 30Mbps and 120Mbps depending on internet usage. But when i try to download a game or a file I usually get about 1Mbps-10Mbps. Is that normal?

Are you comparing the speed you're getting on speedtest.net vs. Steam's (for example) reported download speed, or do you mean while running a speedtest + downloading a game is slower?

 

If the former (difference between speed in speedtest vs. Steam):

Speedtest.net reports speeds in Mb, which stands for Megabit. Steam reports speeds in MB, which stands for Megabyte.
1 byte consists of 8 bits, so 1MB = 8Mb, or in your case it's 1-10MB = 8-80Mb.

The speeds you're getting between the test and download line up, it's just a different way of representing the numbers.

 

If the latter (lower speed while doing speedtest + downloading a game):
If you're doing two things at the same time, one of them will take priority and the other will take a hit in performance.

Speedtest connects you to the closest server. Back and forth, one hop, from point A to point B.

 

Steam or other DRMs or browser downloads are usually: point A to point B to point C. Hence the reduced speeds.

 

And what minibois said. Mb and MB are two totally different things. My ISP offers 1Gbps internet speed and people were complaining that they're not getting 1GBps.
