I just moved into a house that has super thick carpet, guessing around 100 oz weight. What are good options for a chair mat or chair rug?

I picked up a basic chair mat without thinking too much, its pretty much a joke, the casters flex the mat over a half inch not only sink into the carpet but also put purmanent dents in the mat that are really annoying.

I don't know how much I trust "carpet safe" casters. My kids seem to be very fidgety while on the computer. I have seen them completely destroy brand-new carpet in less than 2 years, so yes, I 100% want something under their chairs, just not sure what.

If I were faced with this problem, I'd grab a 5/8" or 3/4" sheet of 4'x4' plywood and use that. Maybe build some dams along the edges to keep the casters from rolling off, and put down some linoleum on the top to protect the surface.

And getting rid of the kids isn't an option?

If you're doing the chair mat then you're gonna need something thick for thick carpet so you may need to combine both options to achieve the desired results.  Myself I hate chair mats so I'd do that as the bottom layer with a rug on top.  And maybe not a rug with piling but something that is twisted and coiled.  Are those called rope rugs?

Needle felt carpet (these typical office carpets) might also be an option. You'd have to glue on to some sort of plate, though. But considering the circumstances, this might necessary anyways.
